I whole-heartily agree with you, I'm not a fan of JW but it's school fees and it's also a talking point when in the company of whisky enthusiasts. Case in point, last night's Glenfiddich tasting was hosted by an ex-Diageo brand ambassador and the group had a small discussion about it. I don't think anyone in the group is going to buy a bottle.

I'll give it a chance and try different things but at the end of the day for that price point(R350-R450) there's so much better to be had that does not require that much effort to enjoy. On that note, I hear that Glen Grant is not going to be available in SA soon.

I also enjoyed it. i put the bottle in the freezer to see what would happen to the label, but I had no idea that was how it was meant o be drunk. I just had it straight and both my wife and I thought it was worth the money.

The Glen Grant is pretty good - had it sometime ago. Must find a couple and stock up.

Would be interesting to see what people think are other good drams in that price range
 
My neighbor came over with a bottle of Lagavulin 16 yr. Very very smokey whiskey.
He then proceeded to mix it :mad:

Oh come on, you can't have it both ways. How can JW be the "ultimate pinnacle of commercial pandering, is an insult to Whisky on a global scale" when the others are not because you consider them decent? Commercial pandering = commercial pandering surely?

Anyway, not looking for a fight, just surprised at the vitriol aimed at something you haven't tasted.

Glenmorangie 10
Glen Grant 10(just barely in the price range)
Laphroig Select
Glenfiddich 12
Auchentoshan 12(picked this up for R406 using a discount code on bottles app)
Chivas Regal Extra
Chivas Regal 12
Monkey Shoulder
Singleton 12
Dewars 12 & 15
Three Ships 5 year old and Bourbon Cask

Nope was a glass full of something bubbly. I asked him what the heck he was doing and he said he's not a connoisseur anyway. Maybe I should offer to swap his whiskeys for some 2 keys.

If he's adding Sprite or even soda water, then I don't think he'd know the difference and would save a fortune :p

So Friends Take a lot order arrived and its definitely not the same as the bottle orders from over seas. Over seas bottle is 700ml, 41% alc and has a limited ed sticker with a serial number on the back.
Take a lot is the standard SA 750ml, 43% and no limited ed sticker on the back.

They are all different whiskies from different distilleries, not all of them are from the Johnny Walker stable. All these brands are owned by Diageo. Diageo owns the greatest percentage of the alcohol brands out there. Part of their success is their marketing team and the fact that the entry level whiskies are easy drinking and appeal the mass market. As you move into the medium to top level ranges then you find a lot more variation and character to these whiskies, sometimes requiring an acquired taste as opposed to being immediately likeable(entry level).

South Africa law says whisky sold here must be bottled at min. 43% ABV and 750ml. Not sure about the differences about the sticker and serial number.

No sure, I know and understand. I’m only saying if the JW bottle is pandering to commercialism, then surely the good stuff in the other range is also.

Apparantly Lagavulin and coke is an awesome drink, I'll try it someday.

My take on how whisky should be drunk, you paid for it so drink it however the hell you want. If I pour you a dram then I'll make a suggestion but it's your to do with as you wish. Personally I prefer my whisky neat.

I would love to see your source of this, not because I'm being difficult, but because I would like to check it out. Reason is I see a lot of smaller bottles, and I've also seen whiskies bottled at lower than 43% ABV before :D
