Actually, it's distilled from a fermented, alcoholic wash made with the above, so it's pretty much vodka, just like whisky, brandy, gin, etc. are all types of vodkas before being finished (using spices, infusions, botanicals, woods and more). Remember vodka is basically ethanol and water. But yes, not to distract from this thread.
The name Vodka, indicates very specific origins and ingredients. So you cannot say that Whisky, brandy, gin etc. are al types of vodkas.
That is not correct. All spirits are ethanol and water before being finished, yes. But vodka cannot be indicated as a generic term for all these different distillates.

I'll start referring to it as "clear spirit" then. Vodka can be made from a ton of ingredients (traditionally potatoes but modern, good vodkas are made from grains, for the most part), but OK. Clear spirit is probably safer.

Even "new spirit"....

Yes new spirit is the other term I've heard of before, and just forgot the name. PS, that bottle looks awesome.

Hey guys, quick question. How long will whiskey be fine for once opened the searching turned up 6months - 2 years?

Is this correct?

If you keep it out of direct sunlight, and keep the lid or cork on, it lasts really long.
I've had some of my opened whiskys for 8 years without easily discernible changes in taste.

A long, long time. The headspace is more important. Generally, once the bottle gets down to about 1/3rd, it's time to get it finished up, otherwise you're risking oxidation.

OK I have a 10 year anniversary coming up. Getting a 10 year old Single Malt to celebrate it with seems like the right thing to do.

Suggestions that won't break the bank (R500 - R600)?

A bit harsh and unbalanced for my palate, but not a terrible dram.

HP seems to struggle when they bottle young Whisky...the consensus being that they're just not getting it right. Who knows why?
More heavily peated Whiskies are really good when still young, especially Ardbeg and Lagavulin, also Laddie.

HP struggles with the peat balance in younger Whisky. That's why they are bringing so many weird NAS stuff to the market. Maybe the sweeter Heather peat from that area, has a different impact on the flavor in young Whisky.

I love their 18yo though. That one they got right for sure.

Oh, and anything above the 10 is extremely expensive....even the 6 NAS releases.

I've seen Master of Malt mentioned on here a few times. Between the delivery fee and customs duties, is it actually worth it ordering from the UK?

If you're willing to pay for stuff that you cannot get here in SA, then yes it is.

But if you think a R400 bottle of Whisky is expensive in general, then no, it is not.
