Anyone tried the Whisky that Four Cousins Wine are bringing in?

Run away......... vile stuff. I had a tasting of all of them with four or five other folks, I could not finish any of them. Others with me were in agreement.
 
The IWSC's gold medal is so misleading. The judges test 65 samples in a day and award 240 gold medals to spirits alone.

I get that taste is highly subjective but I can't understand a world where J. Walker Red is an entire tier HIGHER than Three Ships 10 year old.
 

New Japanese Whisky Labelling Standards


Whisky has been made in Japan for almost 100 years, but until recently it has been relatively unknown. The huge growth outside of Japan in the past few years has started to show cracks in the way that it is regulated and led to calls from both in and outside of the Japanese whisky community to have stricter rules on its production and labelling. Today, the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association has announced the steps that it is taking to tighten up what producers mean by the term Japanese whisky.

The New Rules

As of 1 April 2021, members of the JSLMA will start to move towards a new standard for labelling their whiskies. Along with the labelling is a commitment not to allude to being Japanese whisky through naming, packaging and advertising. They’ve published full details in English on the JSLMA website. The deadline to follow the new rules is 31 March 2024.

In order for a spirit to be called Japanese whisky it must adhere to the following rules:

Raw ingredients: Malted grain must always be used, but other cereal grains can also be included.
Water: Water used in production must be extracted in Japan.
Production location: Saccharification, fermentation and distillation must be carried out at a distillery in Japan.
Distillation: Must be distilled to less than 95% ABV.
Ageing: Spirit must be aged in Japan in wooden casks of no more than 700 litres for a minimum of three years.
Packaging: Bottling must take place in Japan.
Strength: Bottled spirit must be at least 40% ABV.
Colouring: Plain caramel colouring (E150) can be used.

I just popped in at Checkers in Mossel Bay. Glenfiddich 18 for R1499. I asked them to scan it and they did. No discounts whatsoever. I showed them your post and they were quite confused, confirming all prices and all discounts are the same throughout SA. You were very lucky!

I did have some luck myself and got Germana Cashaca in stock at Tops in Mossel Bay. R450 vs R550 at WhiskyBrother.

No they didn't swipe my xtra card. As if they thought it wouldn't make a difference. Next time I'll force them to also swipe it before "checking the system" for any possible discounts.
 
I've noticed in the two Checkers stores in Hermanus that the Glennfidich 15 is priced at R749 in one, and R849 in the other. So unless it corrects to one or the other on scanning, I'm not so sure of a centralized pricing model.

Just my 2c.

Yeah I hate to say it but Checkers staff aren't the most aware of what is and isn't discounted. Some stores will have the special advertised and some won't. I suspect the discount is related to swiping the card.
 
I just tried at Hermanus Checkers and no dice. Scanned the Orange card first and it came up full price.

Seaweed & Aeons CS #001 Bottling Note

So, you know Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire? Fantastic Islay single malt, aged for 10 years. Yeah, that one. What they've done here is they've bottled up that excellent whisky at cask strength! It's a terrific single malt Scotch whisky from an undisclosed distillery on the legendary Isle of Islay, with 25% of said whisky having been finished in first-fill Oloroso sherry octaves, and finally bottled at 57.5% ABV. This has bolstered the complex, satisfying smoky notes, as well giving those rich, fruity, sherried notes some more heft, too


The Sherry comes through on the nose. Then the strong salty sea coastline. The high ABV does say hello to the tongue at first. Then the peat comes through. Long lingering aftertaste.

Adding some water tones down the ABV and leaves more peatiness / tobacco. Delicious. Won't say no to a bottle.

Must say am quite enjoying the bottles I bought. Want to order some more but that's a bit far out for me haha
I was told that they will be releasing them again towards the middle of this year.
Not sure if this has changed since. Is was a few months ago.
