Biggest bargain I saw this weekend was a Checkers selling this gift set for R450. It's R549 at other Checkers.

Good to know, thanks
My short whisky journey has introduced me to flavours I never thought I would enjoy in a drink, smoke, salt, pepper, malt, wood etc. and connected me with flavours of nostalgia, butterscotch ( like the old Milky Lane one ), licorice which sent me the bourbon route.

It's all very subjective so what I enjoy may not be what you enjoy vice versa but the Blantons Gold hits your mouth from all angles and finishes for days.

Why is this such an issue??

Do your homework when shopping for Whisky. I go to all online sites and compare pricing before pulling the trigger on a purchase.

If TA has a bottle of Laga 16 for R 1800 or whatever, I just smirk and browse further.

Let's talk about Whisky/ey instead of "irritating" eCommerce practices.
yeah. I think I've got doing my homework when purchasing whisky checked hey. But thanks for the tip anyway ;-)
but since u asked why let me regale you. BUT - skip this middle blah blah for some great deals i found on TAL.

  • The issue is around TAL being a typical 'go-to' online shopping destination for me and thousands others.
  • Its a convenient way of purchasing, and hence the issue of price exploitation.
  • Further, its an institution in SA and Africa. and institutions, when left to do as they please, will exploit especially the gullible.
  • Other reasons, innate as they may be, are around trust and switching costs. I've personally used TAL since inception - pre-Kalahari merger. trusting another online with my payment details is one i rarely do.
  • in the context of lockdown, i prefer not to frequent outside, and the reason i came upon these price disparities was I happened to be running low on Laga after watching a little bit of ol' Ron Swanson :-D.
so here I go to TAL and its a R2k price. and this was a tad after the budget speech, which i did not watch. So i was like - wtf happened with the sin taxes. !! :-D

Hence the blah blah on TAL. Yeah its a b!tch and moan at something that probably wont change - but perhaps someone becomes aware that R2k isnt the price of a laga 16 presently in 2021.
Lastly, where to get whisk(e)y locally, at keen or fair price points is the subject of posts not uncommon on this thread. In fact its great that we share that kinda info here to help each other out.

Sooo, with that in mind there is an AWESOME special on Laphroaig QC going for R650 on TAL and for the 10yo for R600. You will also see ACA Liq selling it for R980. Makro has the QC for R800 presently and the 10Yo for R700. Heres the links below . See, i dont hate TAL. I LOVE good whisky deals.

Tried this little whisky on the weekend I was blown away seriously good stuff- still a little steep for a 6 year though. Lucky I wasn't paying.

I too love talisker...look my notes won't be great but let me see what I can give you. It's exactly what you would imagine a young talisker taste like. So it's more spikey, I found it pretty complex lots of spice and flavour not at smokey-peaty as the 10 if memory serves correct. Lots of citrus/lemon and then pepper. Reminds me of that pepper lemon seasoning.

Haven't had the dark storm, had the 10, Skye and 57 north.

Were you the guy at the whisky library with a bunch of people on Sat? I think I heard one person who thought Japanese whisky was made with rice xD.
