Spotted this on takealot for R299 a bottle. Anyone heard of this before?

Tasting is subjective. 10 different people will each draw it up differently. But still handy for a general quick guide for many.
Objectively speaking it isn't the case though. No one will find a Lagavulin 16 to be more peated than an Ardbeg 10 because Lagavulin gets malt at roughly a 35ppm spec and Ardbeg at a 55ppm spec (yes I'm aware this isn't an exact science but it's close enough more often than not). Then we have Uigedail a sherry finished whisky which is somehow not as rich as Corryvreckan which is mostly ex-Bourbon casks and virgin oak. While I agree a lot of tasting is subjective, there are some objective means for placing whiskies in this type of chart.

I just remembered seeing this in Pineslopes Tops at the beginning of the month.

The R800 special at Checkers Mall of Africa is the Scottish Barley one. Opened it to have a look and the glasses are gorgeous.
Spent my whisky budget on Ardbeg 10 though since I had never tried it; if they have any of them Port Charlotte next time I go I'll pick it up.

I’ve had so many of these and the Classic Laddie gift packs over the last couple of years that I was flogging the glasses for R10 each at a car boot sale last Sunday

Beautiful glasses though and my favourite for many moons until the Three Ships freebies took over towards the end of last year.

A few weeks back I found a Peat Monster 10th anniversary edition at Bootleggers Fourways. That bottle has been there a while on a top shelf in a locked cabinet. This was a 2013 release. Upon further inspection, the presentation box was badly damaged. I said to the manager that he will battle to sell that bottle but for the right price, I'll take it off his hands. He gave it to me for R1,100. Bargain. I took the damaged box as well. I tried sourcing a box, even from Compass Box directly but to no avail.

Anyway on the weekend, I put on my Bob the Builder hardhat and set to work.

Opened it up by heating the glued portion with a hairdryer.

I wet the damaged bits and ironed it between brown paper sheets. I repaired the tears with a combo of clear packing tape inside the box and clear glue. Double sided tape used to stick it back together.

And voila - not perfect but acceptable

That tasting kit is so cool, the cutout for the bottles as well as the finish of the cloth in the box. SWMS should take some lessons.

SMWS was R660 including shipping, while S&S was 3 times the price plus shipping. I would rather have slightly less slick packaging and a cheaper set TBH. Maybe just me?

Technically the S&S was less than double the price of the SMWS tasting kit @ R 1190 on special.

BUT if you look at the ave. price of the S&S Whiskys vs. the SMWs prices, the exclusive packaging and price makes more sense.

I mean one of the samples is a 45yo Whisky....

Got to compare regular SP's to compare properly. Sale price, makes it better value, but suspect that is dropping the set close to or below cost price.

Agreed but I doubt they would have moved the S&S sets are the original price. Even the discounted price is quite pricey but I really wanted to try the Imperial and Bunna, it does help that there's a 45 y/old in there.

Concur - as you know I held out for a while and eventually caved, whereas I pulled the trigger on the SMWS set without hesitation.

Seems pretty rare (not mine - duh)

Bottled in February 2021 as Release 1.3 of the Jim McEwan Signature Collection, like all bottlings within the collection, it was bottled un-chill filtered, with no added colour and at natural cask strength of 57.5%, it yielded only 290 bottles.

That Deanston VO is rather good but on the lighter side so have first up in your session.

Yes. Pretty bland. Glad I never bought one when I was considering it.

I actually went specifically to taste the Three Ships 10yo PX, but at R500 a shot I passed. People are selling it for R10 000 a bottle now :(

What, that's insane

10yo PX is nice but it's not my favourite of what I've tried, that still goes to the Boutique-y PX and the whiskybrother PX. Although I remember absolutely loving the first 10yo when I got to try it, only to be blown away by the 21 in progress (at age 18).
