I am a total noob when it comes to Whisky but I got a Black Bottle yesterday and I remember drinking it long ago when it was still advertised as "the bold taste of Islay"...and I hated it.
But last night I decided to try taste all the flavours that are written on the box. Had it with ice and I quite enjoyed it.
What do you pros say about it?

Does not matter what any of us think - if you enjoyed it like that, keep drinking it like that. A producer of high end wines once told me that if you buy it, drink it with anything you like, he is just happy you bought it.

Great advice in my view.

I'm looking to buy a nice bottle of whisky for my dad.

I took a look around and ended up with the following two choices in my budget, but I have had neither.

or

Has any tried either or have something in the R1500 odd range that they could recommend?

Thought I would ask as I shadow this thread and you have not led me wrong with whiskey recommendations.

Maybe the last time you tried it it was the old blend, and no doubt the one you bought yesterday was the new one.

Can you give us some hints on what your dad typically likes?

he doesn't have a hectic whisky palate, but he was a massive fan of GLENBRYNTH 21 YEAR OLD. He loves trying new things , which is why I was looking for something new that we could enjoy together.

Thanks for the help guys

that is brilliant, thanks that's the newest top runner. I have been meaning to get a bottle for myself as well

Like others, would also recommend the Waterford. Would not go for either of the two you listed.

Slightly left field - a bottle of Compass Box Hedonism should also go down well.

Thanks for all the help guys, Settled for Waterford Organic Gaia 1.1 Arcadian Series Irish Single Malt as I got free shipping with some Belgian beers I have been meaning to try.

Excited. I will get the hedonism for myself as the end of the month. It looks like an interesting sipper.

Thanks for all the help!!

So the glasses arrived today. Let me start by saying I love Reidel stemware and have used their stuff for years. 99% of my glasses are their products.

The Veritas range are at the higher end, and these are really superb. Nice to use so far. Downside, the stems are VERY long as you can see relative to the whisky bottles.

@MightyQuin this STR is rather good!

How's the Jack Black? Ordered some, but only arriving next week...
I had the batch from last year and it was quite enjoyable. Also had it on tap at Jack Black last week and was very good, and I'm not the biggest fan of stout, except if it is Guinness

I would be too scared to use them, and definitely too scared to let any guests use them :p
