Islay has ruined me. Apart from a bourbon here and there, practically every whisky just seems a bit too...bland.
Laphroaig Select being the best bang for buck I've been able to find.
I feel no guilt finishing a bottle in a week or 2 :laugh:

LOL it was a laguvulin that started my whisky journey. I totally understand where you coming from. A bit more expensive but ardbeg are fantastic too!

I do like Ardbeg, quite a bit. But at 415 for the Laphroaig Select I just don't find myself wanting to shell out for an Ardbeg.

Having said that, I do have my eye on Caol Ila 12 as a possible next purchase.

You can find Ardbeg Wee Beastie for under 500 at the moment. Caol ila 12 is definitely one that will also be on my shelf

I'm trying to put some brakes on my Islay habit, but found myself buying 4 bottles again last month which includes Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10, Bowmore 12 and Smokehead High Voltage

There was a time when Teacher's was my budget dram of choice....but I no longer taste any peat in it (it was actually my introduction to peat), and instead just get some vanilla fudginess.
I was also pleasantly surprised by Glen Moray Peated......but next to any Laphroaig I don't get any peatiness.

JW Black I don't find too bad (and it's available everywhere), but the only time i ever get peatiness from it is if I'm following something like a Jameson with the JWB.

Laphroaig select is my current "go to" as well. :love:

I don't care much for Johnny walker but try island green, it's the travel edition, not potent pest but a beautiful blended pested whisky

The same recent gimmick of putting barrels on ships and crossing the ocean, making the liquid shake and move around etc. Wasn't that nonsense also debunked?

The barrels on water has been proven - did a scientific experiment with bourbon back in 2012 - the water one was markedly different - they also did chemical analysis. Ened conclusion - more wood contact with the movement of the spirit in the barrel.

The Bourbon experiment in 2012 was with Jefferson's Bourbon. It does seem however that the huge heat fluctuations in the hold of the ship played the biggest role, especially as the ship sailed in and out of the Tropics...a lot like the yard ageing done by Balcones and also the massive impact tropical ageing has on Rum.

The "sloshing around" would mix the Bourbon continuously and thus also have an impact, as different Whisky was continuously moving in and out of the wood. And that is what barrel aging is all about, those temp fluctuations causing the in and out of wood movement, not just touching the inside of the barrel.

Maybe Andy should put some barrels outside in the yard in Wellington for a few years...that would be a interesting yard aging experiment. Those 40 degrees summer days with those 5 degree Winter mornings when the mountains are covered in snow...
 
Some goodies. Picked up the Bowmore, PX Macallan and the Glenrinnes Gin 5.1

They were literally still editing the bottles while I was ordering. There was a second Oloroso cask Macallan bottle that was also up that literally vanished. Was called "An Offaly Good Dram". They may be splitting the Sherry Macallan's for the next release.

Was expecting a rum bottle with this outturn.

So there were 3 Macallans ? As there is 2 atm....

The Albino Rhino is quite interesting, aged in Oloroso casks and then finished in Bourbon casks.
