I agree I have not seen any criticism of Mandela, but that's because Mandela was a good leader (not perfect) & Zapiro appears to "love" him. I think he did do a couple of cartoons critising Mandela related to Mandela's chicken run comment & his intolerance of the media during his tenure. But he's pretty objective when it comes to idiotic political behaviour in general.
 
Alan, are you saying that between 1994 and 1999 Zapiro published no cartoons critical of government?

Quite frankly, I'd rather have Mandela back then the current bunch. And Crime was heavy before he took over and as some are quick to point out (and would like to tell all tourists) is still a problem today. As for corruption I think we can safely say the present ANC are far worse.

The current bunch have perfected the art of looting state coffers. And then you have those waiting on the side for their turn at the trough... they see "cadres" in their neighbourhoods turning up in SUV's & rub their hands at the thought.

Have to agree I'm afraid. The ANC has forgotten the people that have put them in government, if only it would come back and bite 'em in the @rse.

No. It was just far more restrained and sympathetic. He has no problem holding Mbeki to account but not Mandela.

I'm not so sure about corruption being that much worse. The arms deal went through in '99. Yengeni defrauded parliament in '98 IIRC and various top corrupt ANC members of today were around then behaving I suspect much the same.

Anyway IMO there's enough evidence to show Zapiro supported the ANC up until the very last years of Mbeki's, who he voted for twice, reign. For me that's enough to doubt his judgment. Sure some of his stuff is on the mark but ultimately he voted for this mess.
 
OMG Alan, do we now have to resort to the "Ballot Box Blues" to "prove" that he voted ANC...if that's the case are we to take the lyrics of every song ever written to be tied to the song writer's life?

Fair enough but at least Mandela had a mind set of reconciliation. Which was amazing considering what the man went through. I'm no fan of the ANC but if the ANC had to rule forever I'd rather have someone like Mandela then someone like Showerhead.

Its interesting how the ANC sees itself as above the law and criticism. How dare Zapiro criticize the ANC, ha ha ha. It would be funny if it werent indicative of their desire to stay corrupt and in power for a long time. We truly live in a one party state. The next step would be for Zapiro to be "silenced" as a threat to the state.

If only they tackled corruption, cronyism, patronage, tenderpreneurship, service delivery, other real problems as well as they tackled criticism... Report corruption of an ANC member or government MP & the response is, we need to investigate, appoint a committee, study the report... etc..., but criticize them and they respond at the speed of light! This Zapiro cartoon describes the problem best.
