No its not, just look at Strollers posts in this thread and it answers your questions.

Refer to this response and see how ignorant some contributors are.

Clearly the etiquette and tradition of the game of golf is way over his head.

There is NO snobbishness; there is style and class and he has neither.

@Magandroid - Go play that first game asap, but ideally on a weekday. Mondays are normally quiet(er) and you will run less of a risk holding up the 4ball(s) behind you :) Be warned, you'll be hooked for life...

We definitely want to go this year but haven't plucked up the courage yet. Also we're 3 noobs that don't know what the hell we're doing.:D
Thanks for the tip though, about going during the week, didn't think about that.

There is a new approach for the people who have never played golf before.

Go to a practice putting green and place a golf ball 300 mm from the hole.
Stroke it in.
Then place the ball 400 mm from the hole and stroke.
Move the ball further away.
Get the message?
You're going to two putt

Start from the pin and then move away.
Putt, chip, approach, wedge, eight iron, seven iron and then the rest.

Batista will not agree, he is a new pro, I am an old one.

Your contribution exposes all the ignorance of the tradition and etiquette of the game of golf.
Golf Clubs and the game has a format and a culture that has evolved over centuries.
You don't belong!!!!!!!!!!

Get off the bus and play soccer.
Rout with the louts in your jeans and tĂŞkkies.

FAO cpu.
At least I wear golf shoes with my jeans. :)

I thought this was quite interesting.

Does taking a divot make for a better golf shot. I see all the pros doing it and i've tried doing it but cannot seem to get it right. I understand that when playing your iron you actually hit the ball on the upswing which means that when the club reaches it's lowest point it should be behind the ball.

The divot is supposed to increase the spin on the ball, iirc. Just how it's to be executed is a mystery to me.

This was a second shot on a par 3. But I missed that putt and scored a 4 :( . But still I was very chuffed with myself :).

This was my fourth round after more than 18 years of not playing. And even 18 years ago I wouldn't say I really played.

Downswing. You hit the ball first, then the grass. Causing a divot doesn't do anything for the shot - it merely shows you're hitting down onto the ball. Hitting down onto the ball gives better results - power transfer is better and the ball will go higher; with shorter irons backspin will also be increased.

Golf is a wonderful (albeit at times frustrating) game. I've been privileged to play some fantastic courses in the Western Cape; none more so than Pezula, Simola and Pinnacle Point (Google images for these three courses to see what I am on about ). I am yet to experience the courses up country, but all in good time. I am also a bit of a hacker but I do have my good days (I consider shooting anything less than 90 a good day - best is 83 at Stellenbosch). Otherwise I shoot mid 90's.

To anyone who thinks it's a game for rich elitist snobs, you could not be further from the truth. Yes, it is expensive (which is why I am not a member anywhere and only play once a month), but you can still enjoy some great specials at some top courses. I play it to get out of the office, and since I don't play club cricket anymore, a 6.5km stroll (although, with all the diagonal walking to my ball, it's more like 8.5km! :D ) is great exercise.

Football, basketball and Rugby are good examples.

The nice thing about golf is that it is just you against you. There's no one else to blame if you hack your balls into the trees or the water hazard. You not reliant on other players to make you play better and there's no 'impartial' adjudicator (i.e. referee) to potentially interfere.

Awesome sports are the ones where you cant even think about something else while playing them

There is no better sport to enjoy scenery than golf. Whack your ball (hopefully) down the middle, then while you are strolling to it, take a look around and drink in the scenery. (refer to my comments above about Pinnacle Point, Simola and Pezula as to what I mean).

Yes, golf isn't for everyone, but it is something that I believe people should try at least once...
