Whole Cell-C network down?

After my attempt to get a MTN sim working (see post in MTN section) and not being able, I decide to try a Cell-C pre-paid sim. Stick it in the phone, get the settings via SMS and try to connect. Nada, nothing, no connection.

Phone the help desk. The poor women is trying to sound so sexy and husky that you can barely make out what she says. For normal support you need to press '1', i.e. balance, PUK, etc. For "Data support" she recons, "Please press your option". What the hell is an "option", any key other than '1' (which don't have a data support entry) is met with a highly annoying and condescending "Hmmm, we do not have that option" or something equally annoying.

Eventually I press 1 and 1 again just to speak to a human. Eventually get through and ask about GPRS settings.

This is when the dude recons the GPRS network is having problems. 'Across the whole country' I ask. 'Yes'. "So no-one, nowhere can work, everything's down?" 'Yes, try again in 10 minutes' End of call.....

I've now wasted an entire afternoon to try MTN and Cell-C. What a waste of time.

Been fine this end, well most times, find that IP# changes and you hae to log on if you are not active, but other than that

I don't get a VM signal but a Cell C signal with my VM sim, strange.

This morning, still could not connect. So I redownloaded the APN settings to the phone. Learned in the MTN thread that this (re)activates the data connection and it worked.

So I ask you; The Cell-C call desk did not want to give me any settings and insisted the WHOLE network was down and that was my problem. Looks like this crowd is an ever bigger bunch of idiots than the MTN call desk.....

I know, from personal experience, that, if you are using a new cellC sim card and after downloading all the settings, you have to make a billable call before these settings are active.

Virgin have just come back to life.
Planned shutdown for maintenance but they had no idea when it would come back!!

Planned shu.... What? And why did I not know about this?! If I knew, I could had have made the necessary arrangements etc etc for some kind of a backup. It would have had been nice to have known about this beforehand!!

I'm getting no Cell C coverage, not even voice, this afternoon - Rosebank. Anyone else experiencing this, or is my cellphone poked?

Hi

Nope - it's not your phone. My connection started going flaky from about midday (in Edenvale), not allowing me to check airtime or get incoming calls. I'm in Rosebank now and it's just giving me 'Emergency only'. Tried an MTN SIM in my phone - no problem.

Checked with VM and apparently they're having major network issues today... Response was 'we're working on it'....

Weird, since my -other- VM SIM in my standalone GPRS modem has been working just fine the whole day..

thanks, i drove from rosebank to parkhurst, no coverage. sigh...

Between Hout Bay and Plumstead, my cell c sim has no signal or network access in either of my phones since 2pm this afternoon. My Virgin sim has had no problems in both phones.

I have an old cell c simcard which i tried and it works though it has no airtime. Calling Cell C customer care, 140, doesn't answer, it only rings. Dialing 141 option 5 says "we're sorry. Our customer care centre is closed at the moment. Please call later."

I tried Manual network selection, all 3 providers appear but there's "no access" on my normal Cell C sim. However, my old Cell C sim can access either Vodacom or Cell C like usual. Weird.

is it number ranges or what, that enables some and not other simcards?

Hi all,

I can confirm in Eldoraigne no Virgin signal. I had a bit of signal earlier in the evening, but I was unable to connect via gprs, and literally 30seconds after I got the signal, I lost it again. It's beginning to seem as if it's a country-wide problem. Am I correct in making this assumption? Lets hope something good comes out of this... like better speeds and reliability.

I noticed it wasn't working at about 14h00 today (May 26) and as of 22h00, it still isn't working. When I try to manually select an operator, I see all 3 (Cell-C, Vodacom, MTN) but if I try any of them I get a 'No access' error. For Cell-C the error takes a while to come up, but with trying Vodacom or MTN it comes up almost instantly.

I'm all for porting to MTN... as long as I can keep the low data rates :P

Cheers,
LF

Lets Port

OK here it is.

Go to an MTN dealership on monday request a port ASAP. Make sure to clear up your sms an airtime so you don't lose this.

3 million of us can make the difference and get Cell-C sold by Thursday. Hope the porting system does not crash.

New investors buy cell-c and drop off network and cheaper sms and data rates instantly os they will have a network with no subscribers. ( a world First ) We sit back and relax and give our money to MTN for a month or so then port back to Cell-C with lower tariffs.

Lets do it !

We must use the power in our hand ! No porting to Vodacom they have 21 million people giving them Cash.

My signal was very flaky all afternoon in Somerset West and Stellenbosch - my phone kept losing network coverage and resetting randomly. For a while, when I tried to make voice calls, I only got an automated female voice saying "No" and was then disconnected.

Been fine here all week, phone and internet

the odd hack, into my system... which is cool in a honey pot sort of way

My signal was back around 8am. Never had trouble with my VM simcard, only with one of my 2 Cell C sims.

Cell C Customer Care Centre is still closed though.

Yeah, my signal was back this morning. It's an absolute shocker: no call centre, not even a recorded message saying they're working on it, no mention on their website, nothing. I hope someone in the media has picked up on this story.
