Who'll win the Tablet OS war?

I'd bank of the OS which allows the tablet to use network resources as if it were it's own.

If Android can find a way to seemlessly intregrate shared network resources then it's won. Otherwise MS will catch up.

The problem with the tablet war is that its still trying to find its spot in the consumer's house. Some people want to replace their PC's while other wants to use it purely as a reader or maybe stick it to a fridge to make up a shopping list, most wants a little bit of everything.

I would say the winner is going to be something that comes the closest to scratching most itches. Sure Windows is closer to the desktop as it has all the great features that you can use at a desktop, but the problem is it is designed from the ground up to be bloated and use mouse and keyboard as input. Sure Microsoft can come and make a touch input for the shell but that leaves the applications, they are designed for mouse and keyboard not touch input, and most application themselves are bloated by design and price. In order for Windows to win, both the OS and applications will have to make "light" versions, and I don't think Adobe is going to be to happy when they make something for a tablet and the desktop users use it instead of there prime products. Can you imagine what would this do to Bloated Office when people can start getting Office 2011 light for 99c and run it on there PC's? If Microsoft goes the Windows Mobile 7 route they will have the same issues as iPad, As they also live in a "me only" world

iPad on the other hand is trying to hard not to be a PC, in fact you can not use an without having access to an actual PC. You can not load up your music collection, share data with other devices like another iPad without access to a pc: Example if you write a shopping list on your iPad you can not simply go into a file manager and copy it to another device, you will have to go via the cloud or a PC. The applications on the device is designed for a "Me only" world. Sure you can buy x application that does function z but after a while they all going to add up, and simply why would you buy applications for something the competition does out of the box.

This leaves us with Android that is like a PC in that you can load software or even upgrade without the need for a market, or even a PC. The applications within the device can share data without going via a 3rd part or cloud store. Simple question can you copy your movie/music/pictures or even the game you downloaded from a 3rd party from your device to your wifes's/friend's without using a pc? Its also like an e reader in that it connect to books stores and have access to cheap applications that is designed for touch input. A simple example Android can even connect to your ADSL using wi-fi with its own username and password without paying extra, so it can already share things in your house better than iPad can.

Don't get me wrong I have an iPad 2 myself and love the device.... but the more I use it the more I notice its limitations. It cant even replace my Netbook. But I truly believe that Android has the makings to be able to win this war in the future... I even have my eyes on this little toy.

I'm sure Apple will win because they have the sales infrastructure at present.

But in a year or two Android tablet sales will surpass Apple's tablet sales - mark my words !

Perhaps but I feel that is quite a bold assumption seeing as that none of the android tablet makers have anything to compare to Apple's retail arm. People compare tablets to smartphones where they should perhaps be comparing them to mp3 players.

I have both, I must say I enjoy my android and iPad. Android is nice to hold with one hand, small enough to carry. I use my iPad for games and web browsing. 10" screen is just superb.

iPad for battery life and screen quality / size. 10 hour battery life
Android for ease of use, free apps and nice for emails. 5-7 hours battery life

My 2cents

When you say Android, I hope that your not referring to the 7" Galaxy Tab, because its carp.

I think the market will initially look a lot like the desktop market, except it will be Android vs iOS instead of Windows vs Mac. The potential disruptor will be Microsoft, who has been very late to the market with their smartphone and tablet operating systems, but don't rule them out completely because they have been late getting into markets before, and when they get going they can really dominate quickly - e.g. they were nowhere in the browser war, allowing Netscape to dominate for the first few years but managed to turn that around in a very short period. The market will probably only ever support two, max three major operating systems on any hardware format because the majority of application developers will only ever target one or two platforms for their products, which is why the fringe OS's will never go mainstream.

Ironically, it could ultimately settle down to exactly the same situation as the desktop market, iOS for the AppleTards, Windows for the mainstream due to compatibility and familiarity with the majority of desktops, and Android becoming more the specialist open source platform for the tech heads. The reason why I think that Android's dominance may not last is that the growth of Android is not driven by market demand, but by manufacturers who see it as a cheap no-strings attached operating system for their hardware. Give them a really good Windows OEM platform and many of them may go that route instead.

i love the tech behind the tablets, but just not something to replace a laptop, like a Dell xps15 no doubt one off the best laptops right now, not forgetting the Alienware range, pricey, but sorry tablet, u guys look and feel good, ipad2, xoom, playbook, not gona creep into my credit card statement anytime soon

Android is already taking the lead in smartphones...surpassing Apple in the US...and that's big...

thats soo true, im not biased so ill say, i got an iphone4, and the phone rocks no doubt but steve jobs disapoints his people, android just has tooo much leverage over steve,he needs to bulk up a little

You seem to forget that the only way Microsoft leads is when it does not play by the rules.
The only reason Windows is the top OS on the desktop is because OEM's where not allowed to sell PC's without the OS pre-installed. it even has a name Microsoft Tax
The only reason M$ won the browser wars was because it came with Internet Explorer pre-installed, before that they could not even get a foot hold.
All of there top products was acquired, from the OS to Word even the Internet Explorer, go read the history on how badly they treated Spyglass Inc to steal IE from them.
I can go on and on with examples but you get my point.

So yes they have an option to lead the market but that will only be when they find some way of eliminating the competition, not by having a better product.

Example they will try and sue Google to kingdom come or something similar.

I bought a superpad from a company called buyadroid. It is Android 2.1 powered and works in RSA with 3g.

It is fills the need for a mobile computing device, read email, browse the web , minor word reading editing, etc . Not a laptop replacement, but 15.8 million Ipad users also found it filled a place in their lives.

So I see a place for these mobile devices. Honeycomb 3.0 should be great thou.

No dispute here, but I have sneaking suspicion they will find a way to do just that - their relationship with Nokia, for instance... And they could leverage compatibility with their huge Windows desktop user base to develop integrated products that would make consumers *think* they need MS on their phone.

It's a no brainer - Android will win here in SA and the rest of the developing world. How the heck can Apple even compete if they use us as their dumping ground for they old models, don't even have iTunes SA up and running...wake up Apple, your arrogance has caused you to lose the race already.
