Why are people staying with Afrihost?

I love doing business with Afrihost. I find their online client zone a pleasure to use and when I've needed to contact support via email, they've been prompt and efficient.

Their capped accounts are priced competitively and perform as they should.

Sadly though, uncapped is a mixed bag and one that threatens to permanently soil their good name and reputation. They need to get a handle on this and soon!!!

I stay with Afrihost due to the price and the fact that I have not had any real issues with the speed or service. I am not a big torrent freak and download approx 60 - 80Gb per month on 4Mb/s - Uncapped made more sense than paying approximately the same amount as 50Gb Capped.

i stream about 350Gb of netflix and hulu monthly (pretty much whole day every day) on Afrihost 10Meg uncapped. Never had a problem.

I like Afrihost as well and I find their strength to be in their client zone as well as pro-rata billing. That UI is quite polished and very functional.

That said, since their move to MTN the service has been horrid. I cancelled my uncapped 4Mbps at the end of November because I just couldn't handle the slow speeds (and my usage was typically < 50GB / month). For example, a 200MB file (database dump) took over 2 hours to download.

It's all good and well I can get full speed 23h00-05h00 but that doesn't help if I need to download a file quickly during the day or want to watch YouTube video's. The weekends weren't much better.

In December they had a 25% discount promotion, so I subscribed for a capped account thinking it would be better. The service was horrid there as well. YouTube constantly buffering and never hitting full line speed (even though it's a capped account). Downloads still horribly slow.

The funny thing is, one of my colleagues is on their 10Mbps uncapped packages (line also managed with Afrihost) and he manages to pull down tons any time he wants at typically the 600KB-900KB/sec range. I just don't understand it.

I stay with them because I don't have any problems so no reason to move and I've always had pretty good service

Staying because I'm perfectly happy with the service, especially at the price point.

Also very happy with afrihost. I get great speeds and I've never experienced network downtime. Also, their prices are great.

Jip i've also had decent service from them, I even got line migrate to them and they sorted out my latency issue within a week, which I struggled with telkom for about 3 months before deciding to just migrate and afrihost seemed like the simpler choice, yes maybe downloads are slow, but I dont intend to download the whole internet before some sort of apocalypse, and yes their customer support is excellent, very responsive and knowledgeable, not like phoning telkom and being like hey id like my port reset and dont really know what you mean by that or the reason for a port reset.

Thanks for this thread, OP :)

Glad there is space for people to also post their positive experiences and reasons for staying. We've always believed that technical issues come and go, but consistent service is what keeps our clients with us.

Awesome-sauce!! :)

I mean totally, yeah, let's just ignore the people who have problems on Facebook.
Can't stand you ripping people off. And yes, there are people that are getting what they pay for, but what about the others? It's pathetic.

Agree totally, a few (A FEW) users say they love the service and AfriMan is all happy and replies, etc. But the minute thousands of users complain there is silence and nobody can explain anything. Especially in regard to the constant, 17 hour a day shaping.

I have a slight feeling that most of the people that LOVE the service, work for AH or affiliated companies.

If you had any experience with customer service you'd know that people only speak up when they're unhappy. Creation of threads to say how happy you are is pretty damned rare. So factor that into your reading of the feedback...

I have been with afrihost since they burst onto the scene way back with their great prices , to date i have had 4 people from work also use them as well after i recommended them , and we use them at work as well.

Alas the last weeks have been HORRID with downloading , methinks the mtn move might have been hasty , but am hoping it will improve

yup, everyone in this thread that commented didnt mention if they are on uncapped or capped products.. the one guy (Polygon) that did commented negatively in relation to the uncapped.

And we are not talking about fancy UI's , most people on their uncapped accounts seem to generally have a very bad time with afrihost, , where you "supposedly" get some people downloading the whole internet on afrihosts uncapped products and are still given "bragging rights" ontop of this...

Whoever handles the shaping process should come smoke some weed with me, , seems like that guy is permanently dukgeroek

Imagine if you go to a bottlestore and purchase a case of beer for the month, and as you walk out, you are told that you can only have one beer per week, because other people also have purchased a case of beer for the month. That is insane, and yet it describes exactly the situation with regards to uncapped internet products in this country. And people just accept this, no matter the reasons for accepting it.

Dear Afrihost,

You need to take what everyone has posted on facebook and various other platforms and form a consolidated report into what was an obvious marketing failure with your high-download stats you released.

The users that have been exposed to your UnCapped account for longer than a month are all VERY aware that your automated throttling system kills off your bandwith to next to nothing after the first month of high-bandwith use (Which is debatable what is considered "high-use"). This has been the case with ALL home uncapped users with a very tiny portion (5% or less) that somehow didn't get affected for one reason or another.

Afrihost built a good brand for themselves when they were first to the market with much lower bandwith prices on capped accounts, great service and good latency. You guys basically pioneered the bandwith price war that has now driven down the cost per gig in the long run and you should be commended for that, however, from a business point of view this is not a smart or acceptable move in the eyes of your consumers and clearly something should be addressed.

The unfortunate part is that another person has brought attention to the fact that one of the people on the leaderboard that you posted was infact a customer that canceled his account after the first month because after achieving such great bandwith he could barely use his bandwith, now you use that as bragging rights?

Myself attempted to get an uncapped account in 2010 with you and after the first month you guys throttled my line to 10kb/s which was very embarrassing to us having hosted tourists from oversea's that streamed A LOT of sports (They were scouts from france), which also then ended up costing us A LOT of money because we had to buy loads of prepaid bandwith to accommodate them after we advertised "uncapped" to them before they arrived.

At the end of the day a consumer has the right to choose for themselves, based on your AUP, whether they want to use your service for uncapped or not, but it is downright shameful and BAD business practise to indirectly advertise a product that you CANNOT supply for longer than one month.

Please also do not come here and state that SSL connections are unthrottled, because that is utter nonsense, there is a blanket throttle on the account over all mediums, including HTTP.

The bandwith amounts advertised on that leaderboard are NOT achievable in an average month, and they are definitely statistically insignificant as a sample of your average user base, and I'm sure if there was someone who had the patience or money they could probably take legal action against an obviously false marketing ploy like this.

Afrihost please tell me why you ALWAYS ASSUME that because someone goes over 100 gigs they are downloading illegally (or as you always say with your cocky attitude - Linux Distros)? I was shaped to hell downloading Steam games (all legal!!!). And as every person that uses steam knows when a sale happens, most people end up with 10 extra games and this easily equals over 100 gigs. Total War collection was 100 gigs ALONE!!

YOU JUST ASSUME that if anyone downloads more then 100 gigs that they are downloading illegally and therefore your shaping can be justified! So happy I am on IS again. Love it to bits, and they have a Steam content server. Works so well

Could you all please stick to the thread topic instead of veering off into negativity. This thread is about why we are staying with Afrihost, not why you might have issues with Afrihost - that thread is called "Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback"

I had mentioned I was on 4Mb/s Uncapped - and I have had no issues.
