I'm so sick of this, it was like this from the beginning a few months ago, but now its the worst. Tonight I didn't stay connected for longer than 5 minutes, then its off for 15 minutes to 30 minutes, connected again, off again, and so on. And it's been like this every single evening now. I've logged many complaints with telkom, the next day I get a sms that its been resolved. That night it's the same. Logging a new fault, and so on and so on. And I'm freaking sick of this now. Why can't they get a fault to repair? I've searched this site, google, everything I can think of, no luck on resolving this.

When I'm connected, the speed is good. I've tried anything, the modem is directly into the wall socket, no other lines connected, no power surge protector, anything that can cause this, I even tested another router.

Isn't there something I can do, someone I can phone or anything on earth I can do to get it better? Please help a man in need!

So the techie was here today again, testing the line, which was 100% the time he was here. He told me, and showed me on his laptop that there show no errors at all on the line. So he told me all he can do is to change me to another port on the dslam again, and if that doesn't work, he'll have to replace the underground cable. Wel it doesn't work again tonight, and I logged the fault again.

What I cant understand, is say the underground cable is faulty, why does the phone work perfectly, no interference at all.

And why does the dsl disconnects more during the evenings, say from 6 pm onwards?

I'm so fed up with this problem. Any ideas?

Jacques! We had this problem at the office for months. It was also dropping all the time. Every test they did came out fine... but one guy actually took the time to trace the cable all the way to the street and he found a rusty joint which came loose in his hands. See if you can do the same outside your house and check that there are no bad joints or connections.

Thanks, will check tomorrow. Well then I suppose it is possible then for the cable to be faulty. Lets hope I can get it sorted out soon. Thanks

Sounds like dry joint(s) on your physical line either from the jack to the pole (DP) or from the DP to the street distribution cabinet (SDC).

Hi Jacqvt

I suggest call telkom adsl 0800 375 375 ask for EBSC dept. Then ask for LTS test , if Metallic noice is on the line(if dsl line flickers now and then or internet light flickers , you can log a fault , if its your port ask for a port reset. then restart your modem,
the other problem could be if you using 100WR at night something happens, mine disconnects and i have to reset it , just after 8 three days a week

Okay here's a update:

Today a few techies phoned me, all have a different story. Bottom line is, they don't think it is a faulty line or joint. They say it's a software issue. Then the guy told me that because I'm not connected all the time, they cant really see on the logs if there is a problem. I use a routesentry setup, and mostly just connects in the evenings, and some times during the day very quick. So I now set up the router with a international account, and let it stay connected. So then they can go on the logs to see a problem. So far there's not a problem, no disconnects for about an hour now.

What bothers me a bit, while the techie guided me on the settings on the router, I saw under the wan settings, the Virtual Circuit was disabled, and VPI setting was 0.

The router is now set up to stay connected the whole time, but with the Routesentry setup with 2 accounts, was that 2 settings correct, or could that maybe be the problem from the start?

Here's an update again. Today the line keeps loosing sync again, later last night also. So now again I phoned Telkom, reporting it again. The very helpful lady (afrikaans nogal) told me she can't see anything on their side on their pc that there is a problem with my line. But she logged the fault anyway so lets hope.

T also tried to find any connections on the line, but everyone I saw looked fine.
But while I'm waiting for the technician's reply, Isn't there any setting on my modem that can cause the sync problem?

Tell me, what is the EBSC dept, and what is a LTS test? Just saw this now after I phoned them, so next time I'll do that anyway. And please, I dont understand what you mean with "if you using 100WR at night something happens"? What is that "100WR" you talking about?

Thanks.

my hatred for telkom equipment runs deep. line sync problems generally indicate a flaky line/connection somewhere.

So this morning about an hour ago, telkom sent me a message that this problem has been resolved. But no techie phoned me, or was here to do anything. I think they're just getting tired of me. But I'll check it today again, and phone again if it's still not resolved.

Okay while I was typing the above, it went down again for a brief moment. Here is the modem log, can anyone pls tell me if they can see in the log if the problem is maybe something else?

It's me again. So today Telkom phoned my wife about 1h30, telling her they replaced the underground cable. But 11h30 when I was at home quick there was still no techie in sight. So they lie just to get my mouth shut. Well tonight I got home, and saw on the router log that the line lost sync again about 3 times after 2h00, and went down and up again while I typed this.

I just wish there was something I could do, someone to phone to complain. But the are so a bunch of careless monkeys.

I had the EXACT same problem. After all the drama and gnashing of teeth it turned out the modem router was a bit messed. Got a new (free) one swapped out at the Telkom shop (was just in warranty by 1 week) and Hey Presto! everything was working again 100%.

You sure? Hell I dont hope this is the case cause then telkom will charge me if they find out its my modem. Wonder why it would do this? Is there a way to check if it is the modem? I dont have a spare one, and this one is one I bought off someone. Will I firmware upgrade work, and is it possible on a telkom marconi router?

Is there a way to check when this modem was used for the first time? And if I try to swap it for a new one, do they scan it or must I have proof of purchase? How long is the warrentee on this routers?

warranty is typically 1 year. I dunno if you check when it was first used. Surely you can find a friend who has ADSL there who can bring his over to your house to check?

If not then I might have a spare one here somewhere.
