Why did HP buy Palm?

Seeing the Palm has been around for so long they are going to start filing patent suites against apple, htc, nokia and every other mobile device manufacturer out there :D

HP Rocks. This will be good for the palm brand, and further development.

I predict an iPaq style device based on Android, considering HP's deep investment (nonofficial) into Linux. Perhaps even a HP-Droid.

The patent holding is key, as Palm has been playing in the PDA space for years before anyone else even thought it viable.

Well done HP!

Easy: HP Slate with WebOS

HP’s ill-fated Slate looked promising, but then became a sitting duck once we read first impressions. If the rumors are true, HP is working on a new killer tablet that will run Palm’s resource-savvy webOS software. With a hands-on describing the HP Slate as yet another “slow netbook” due to its reliance on Windows 7, it’s no wonder that the rumors of a webOS-based tablet from HP are gaining ground.

It is a really interesting device, but runs as slow as a turtle. I think they could have had something with a faster processor, but that would have led to less battery life than the Slate already had. If rumors of this tablet are true, this can be a killer device – webOS is an outstanding operating system for a tablet.

U2 Bono`s investment company ,Elevation Partners, had about a 30% ownership stake in Palm Inc.
In June 2007, Elevation Partners invested a whopping $325 million for a 25% ownership stake in Palm (PALM) -- then in late 2008, it followed up with an additional $100 million equity investment.
The HP deal values Palm’s equity at $961m – the rest of the deal price is debt, meaning Elevation’s stake will be worth roughly $320m.
So,they are in the red for about $105 million.

Bono founded Elevation Partners in 2004, naming the fledgling firm after a hit from the songwriter’s 2000 album All That You Can’t Leave Behind. At the helm with him included Former managing director at Apple (AAPL) Fred Anderson and Electronic Arts (ERTS) CEO John Riccitiello, among others. The mission of Elevation Partners is stated as “investing in intellectual property and content oriented businesses, as well as traditional media and entertainment companies, where we can partner with management to enhance growth and profitability.”
