Why do people tint their windows?

Privacy? So that the sun isn't as bright? So that it's more difficult to make out any contents inside the car?

*shrug* Your guess is as good as mine.

My car came with slightly tinted windows and I must say the main benefit I get out of it is ... no friggin sunburn. Oki maybe not sunburn but if I open my window a bit and the sun actually hits my arm .. as opposed to the sun through the tinted windows .. you can definitely feel the difference. It is probably just a side effect - but the sun and I don't get along well .. so I am happy for it, whether it was intended or not.

I heard somewhere that tinted windows are illegal, unless you're a diplomat.
Not sure about the validity of this though.

just on the windscreen and to a certain %

so that the cops can't see me sleeping in the back and the dog driving.

To kill what little parking skills they have. Also, for extra excitement when driving at night.

Nah it's legal, as pointed out, for the windscreen (IE. front window) to be tinted the car + tint combo needs to be approved by SABS. Front side Windows may be tinted up to 47% (or something) and rear Windows up to 100% tint so far as I know.

Not that it matters because I've seen a few cars with 100% tint all round (front, side, rear) and Police never pull them over. The law is in place but it hardly gets enforced. It'd be especially hard to enforce if just the windscreen isn't tinted because the Police effectively need the equipment to prove > legal allowed tint on those windows, so you can pretty much put 100% tint on there and the onus is on them to prove it's illegal. Doubt they even have the equipment.

Good to know, thanks for pointing that out

Looks nice, protects people inside from the sun, protects the interior especially if its leather and parked in the sun, if its a smash and grab tint it prevents, u guessed it, smash and grab. U seriously didnt know this?

Tinted cars are bad for police work... the police cannot see the hiding armed criminal waiting to ambush them in the back seat on approach. I think heavy tints should be banned outright... most new cars come tinted for UV/sun burn and you can't even notice the tint.
