Why do we judge Oscar?

He has admitted to shooting her - he can't be innocent.

Same here. I must admit when I initially heard the story I assumed she had gone to his place early in the morning to surprise him for Valentines Day and it all went horribly wrong after that. But everything I have heard since then screams otherwise.

and what of the "innocent" woman who lost her life? where does her story fit in, in your judgement?

i judge him because another woman has lost her life to a man who couldn't just walk away. he couldn't just say she's not mine to have so he killed her in anger. and that's a true fact. too many woman losing their lives to abusive men and no one is sitting up and taking note and doing something for them. instead these women are being ignored and told to get a protection order. what a joke. it's too late when they are dead.

Police don't claim premeditated murder when a negligent driver crashes into and kills a innocent woman. Her death is unfortunate and if the state accepted that it was a mistake then all of us would show proper regard for her. Problem is that they have shifted attention by trying to prove something that didn't happen.
 
I am a little surprised at the hate and venom spewing forth from some of the folk here.
Is it perhaps that he is a famous and successful olympian athlete and people enjoy seeing the "high and mighty" fall from grace ?
 
I think we judge, because he is perceived to be better then the rest of us. Yeah sure he doesn't have legs, but he is an olympian. Companies pay him millions to be their ambassador. He has his pick of the women. On a primal level he is superior to the rest of us even without legs.

Despite all of this, he killed a women most of us would never have a chance with. And so people will judge. At least i will did based on the above.

All the above said, of course i know he is just a man, subject to the weaknesses of every other man.
 
It's human nature to relish in the idea of the mighty that have fallen. It goes back to David and Goliath in some aspects.
Oscar was a hero in the worlds eyes, the fact that he behaved like a ruthless criminal makes us feel human again.
Our country has a high murder rate, it's natural to assume its the poor and the ruthless that commit these crimes, but this shows that anyone can be a murderer. It's a humbling moment for society, which turns to hate and justice very quickly.
The time of the murder also played a big role, we fed with the motion of feb being the month of love, this story was bound to blow up like it did. We were also fed with the rape and violence against woman in the past few months.
It's like the perfect storm, the dark clouds, heavy winds and swollen seas were waiting for a little boat to come by.

The other reason is that he is white, and in an attempt for white people to not seem racist (whether we are or not), and appear as tough on crime across the board, we have come down on him particularly harshly, and very quickly. Especially amidst speculation that we wouldn't do so by the usual suspects. They thought that there would be more sympathy for him because he has no legs, but apparently not.

The reason many black people would come down on him just as harshly is also because he is white, and famous around the world as a white south african. A rare opportunity that they are not going to turn down.

It's self justification, "I'm better than THE BEST because ... " It's embedded in us to be alpha males (or females), so to see an alpha fall is gratifying as it boosts our own self worth.

I think I agree with you.

There would never be so much hate against mr anon who shot his gf. It's because he is a famous Olympian.

Envy is a precursor for resentment.
 
Just very recently, a young previously unknown girl from Bredarsdorp was raped & brutally murdered.
Virtually everyone in the country (and here) is aware of her murder.
Anene Booysen was raped & then hacked open, from vagina to rectum - to the extent that her intestines had slithered out her body as a result of the gaping wound.
Inflicting that kind of injury takes more than a quick slash of a sharp knife, it requires a steadfast effort - hacking away until the objective was reached !

Yet the response to her murder by the folk here was mute by comparison to that of Reeva Steenkamp.

So my question is this - why the disparity in reaction ?
Is it because Oscar is famous & successful & Reeva was a pretty white girl with a promising future.
Or because Anene was a poor unknown colored girl & her boyfriend equally unknown ?

I'm sorry but that is an absolute load of tosh you have just spewed. Who gives a crap that he made a success of himself as a paralympian. Does anybody complain that Usain Bolt is pretty well off? So because he is "special" he isn't allowed to reap the rewards of sponsorships, endorsements and prize monies that came his way but someone like Usain Bolt is?

Come off of it. Nobody gave him the success he earned. He lost his legs, never let that get him down and turned himself into an iconic and marketable sportsman.

And as for Oscar being arrogant? Show me a humble sportsmen. They're rare. Is Usain Bolt humble? Do most rugby players strike you as humble? I know Serena Williams goes on like a diva. I know of a schoolboy that felt Pat Lambie behaved like an absolute prick towards him and his fellow schoolmates when the Boks had a training session at their school. Pretty sure Cristiano Ronaldo is the definition of arrogance.

Because he is disabled he somehow cannot behave like a "normal" confident human in your eyes? Personally, I hate arrogance, but it is something common with good looking, successful and famous people, and that is what Oscar is. To attack his character - which by the way, you don't know save for hearsay - you may as well attack the characters of 70 - 80% of the world's sportsmen and women.

People on self-righteous high horses make me laugh. Everybody is flawed in some way or the other. And to attack someone for using his natural abilities for financial gain is absurd.

Most of the worlds sportspeople don't regularly make the news for getting into altercations, feuds, arguments to the extent that Oscar has. They also don't generally cry "cheat" literally seconds after suffering dissapointments like your beloved Oscar did in the last Paralympics. I can respect his achievements and not begrudge him for reaping the rewards thereof and still think he's a world class prick.

If another sportsman accidentally discharges a firearm in public... then I say they're too negligent to own a firearm too.
If another sportsman threatens other people repeatedly with violence... then I'd say they have a violent streak too.
If another sportsman has as many brushes with the law WRT assault etc... Then I'd say they have violent tendencies too.
If another sportsman lays a finger inappropriately on a member of the opposite sex... I'd call them a scumbag too.
If another sportsman shoots through a closed door four times into a second story toilet with the only access being a 600x600mm window without a warning... then I'd call them a murderer too.
If another sportsman murders his girlfriend... I'd call them a murderer too
If another sportsman murders his girlfriend in a fit of rage and then tries to cover it up... I'd call that person a murderer who never had any REAL principles or guts to begin with.

EVEN if it was a burglar, it would be murder
