Why do you pirate online?

The rights holder will get nothing whether you download it or not. You should not get something for free that the rights holder has decided you should pay for. Wait for the recording copyright to expire or the rights holder to decide you can download it for free and then go wild. If you want something then pay for it, if not then don't download it.

If you weren't going to pay for it anyway, then why so keen to download it in the first place? If you don't see the value in the product, then don't pay for it and the rights holder will not make a cent off you. Maybe in future, they will create a product you see enough value in to pay for it.

Very well said.

Nah, thanks, but I think I'll just download it anyway if I want to.

That's just wrong.

I pirate games and music cause they're expensive. If I find them decent I still don't buy it. What's the point of buying the exact same item you already have?

To support the people that made the product you enjoyed. It also benefits you because then the companies see what content to make more of. It's why I buy as many blu-rays and dvds related to proper sci-fi shows as I can. Regardless if I have the mkv or not.

If this form of entertainment is too expensive for you, maybe try find a cheaper hobby.

Read the Act and Act 125 of 1992 which is an ammendment to The Copyright Act of 1978 as it makes a clear distinction between a musical work and a recording of a musical work.

But I am sure that even with all the evidence provided, you will still respond with:

I am aware of the amendment, but I still don't see how that affects the legal protection afforded in Section 27 (1) (d)...
http://www.cipro.co.za/legislation forms/Copyright/Copyright Act.pdf

The Penalties Section refers to ALL copyrighted works and the legal protection of "private or domestic use" refers to ALL copyrighted works.

Saps is monitoring this thread, though they are using a 256kbps line with constant timeouts and error's so you might be safe.

and I'm not a pirate I'm a ninja.

Movies/TV shows
Is it wrong to download a tv series / movie that you didnt know aired last night and thus missed on dstv ?
According to law vs Logical

Games
If its good enough , ill pay to play it (Whether it be subs or once off).
You only have to look at blizzard showering in money to see people will pay/purchase if its a worthy product.
Wow , Diablo , Starcraft , Authenticators , Blizzcon and other related conferences and related retail merchandise (Replica swords, figurines, clothing etc).

Section 27 (1) (d) still has to adhere to the provision of fair dealing which is not the same as fair use (as used in other countries, i.e. the United States). There is no provision for fair use in the Copyright Act of 1978, nor in any amendments. You still need to argue that your use is reasonably fair and that the copyright holder has not been deprived of their rightful income. Section 27 of Copyright Act of 1978 also deals with the musical work and not the recording of the musical work.

Why? Because the things I want to watch is not available in SA at all. I cannot legally purchase and consume the media involved.

Since I bought my Kindle and created my Steam account I have not pirated an ebook or a game. In fact, I have repurchased some stuff I already owned again.

Also, I find this video to be good on the topic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Qkyt1wXNlI

Because pirating offline is too much of a drag ...

Sorry, I disagree. That protection is more than sufficient. It's all I need until the law is changed.

Piracy exist because people want stuff and they don't want to pay for it.
Business model are wrong? That's junk what wrong with selling something you made? Nothing!
Just they sell it for too much! I see games knocked down to R49-R99 after a year,Now if companies sold games at that price originally then piracy would be alot lower.

I mainly download series because, Full DSTV way too expensive to justify getting for what I watch, then I would also have to get a PVR to record the shows to watch when I wanted to. And plus I am now running on US TV time, so I've already watched the seasons I want to that play on DSTV.

The same guy saying Google search is dying now has credibility to talk about piracy?

Haha, so true. Maybe he should take up writing fiction from now on.
On that note I find googling "torrent:insert wanted file name here" a great way to do both. :D :D :D

so downloading a tv show to watch later is ilegal but reecording on your vcr/dvd is?

You seem to have a problem with that?

South Africa is not the only country in the world where downloading is still legal...

http://torrentfreak.com/dutch-parliament-downloading-movies-and-music-will-stay-legal-111224/

It's got nothing to do with being legal or not. It's like copying someone's homework in school. I never got caught but still felt crap about it.

It's got more to do with right and wrong then whatever the law says.

It's takes hundreds of people years to make a game. Most of that time they work their asses off with 12 hour days and sometimes more. Pirating a game is like a slap in the face to all of them.
