Why does Absa charge R10 to download a statement?

remember South Africa has some of the highest Bank fees in the world,
all the Security and CIT vans and all the rest of it have to be paid somehow,

so they Nickel and Dime you for dumb things like statements.
It's not even the money they charge. Add it to the bank fee then. It is just the technical stupidity limits they empose that makes no sense in a digital age for something that is already available.

Doesn't answer the question though.

I know. I don't work for ABSA, so my guess is its just another revenue stream for them.

Which is why I think to move is a better option. They shafting you with this fee, what else they shafting you on.

I have money. I don't have time for technical limits of stupidity that makes no sense. Other banks also have their issues. Absa has one of the best online banking interfaces. Capitec is a joke. Standard bank, yuck. FNB's makes zero sense.

My only move next will be to a private bank, such as Investec (or whatever is the next best thing), but I need to make a "bit" more money and not screw it up.

This is a ridiculous fee. With Capitec it's totally free.

It's not even like I'm using the pay as you go banking product.

And it's totally online, this must cost them absolutely nothing for this microtransaction.
System I/O costs? You do know generation, storage / compute isn't free.

This thread actually reminds me why I left ABSA, I needed 3years bank statements for tax purposes they charged me over R300.

I then switched to FNB. The app took getting use to but I’ve never really spent my days in a bank since then.

It's makes sense to them, it's a way for them to make more money. I doubt there are any technical limitations etc, they may have been years ago....but I guess since they make money they carried on with it. Some people are evidently happy to pay.

Regarding user interface....make sense if that's important for you.

For me, user interface not high on my priority list. Trying to bank where its cheapest for my needs.

I have given up on the "cheapest". Just see it as another tax. Takes time to move banks and money and too much effort over small annoying things.

Imagine Takealot or your ISP made you pay to view your invoices, or even transaction history for the past 12 months. Yet banks are allowed to do it. (Absa anyways).

They don't even allow you to send an email or CSV every month to yourself anymore. You have to manually download it no later than 3 months from the last one to keep track of your transaction history.

Just IMAGINE your client had the option to have their statement emailed to them every month, or at least every 3 months (due to their limit emposed). Age of technology. Wow! But nope. Gotta get your money honey.

Obviously it is just a small coding limit so they can make you pay for something that requires almost zero effort or resources.

FNB, Capitec and Standard Bank the same?

They good at sending you a lot of spam, adverts and other crap that actually takes up resources and man power.

Or a cellphone provide.... oh, wait.

90 days is current data and you can view it online anytime. If you want a older statement, then it normally means accessing that data which is probably in "cold" storage ie: low maintenance cost but high read cost.

Were you charged for a current statement?
