Why does everyone overtake on the left?

My personal bugbear with lane hogs has zero to do with teh lawz and everything to do with the fact that even someone with the mental acumen of a gnat can figure out that "keep left, pass right" makes sense and helps traffic flow. If you read my posts on the matter, in this and previous threads on the issue, you'll see that my reasoning is seldom if ever motivated by selfishness. I do not expect people to drive into the back of pantechnicons so I can blast through. I do not expect others to sit wasting away in queues of traffic because I might be flying up from behind. If I'm not overtaking someone else, I'm as far left as I can reasonably and safely be regardless of my speed. I merely expect the same courtesy from others.
Funny that I've never been involved in an accident, never had a fist shaken in my direction and never been threatened by a fellow road user. Can you say the same?

Well said.

I will also make the decision on which lane to drive in myself. It is none of your concern. See how this goes round and round?

.

Let's assume that you are drivng up a hill and there is an overtaking lane and a clear sign: "Keep left Pass Right". Do you persist in driving in the right hand lane?

In many cases there is not a solid line separating the two way traffic so an oncoming car can be overtaken by a faster car should the 'overtaking' lane be clear.

This is certainly my concern and you may just meet a stray golf ball.

I am using my common sense to determine that your speeding car is a danger to other road users.

Your car in the right-hand lane is in violation of the National Road Traffic Act, and thus a danger to other road users. Remove yourself from the road before worrying about other motorists!

And your speeding is perfectly fine, right?

If theres enough space to overtake you on the left why are you not in the left lane?
Becasue there may be even slower traffic in the left lane and constant weaving in and out to pass them would be far less safe than staying in the middle lane.

The other issue is that because people all pass on the left, it makes it rather hard for a slow guy in the right/middle to pull over.
I hate these drivers in their fast cars who sit on my tail and when I try to leave a decent gap for the car I have just passed use it to squeeze through and pass on the left. I am not going to pull over and only leave a 10m gap.

hahaha whatever mate, next you'll be telling us to hand over the R66k for an electric bill handed out by the council just because some oke said that it's the law. I won't be moving out of the way for any of you mofos who come screaming up behind me flashing your lights when I'm driving 120km/h in the fast lane..

and what if that idiot is a heart surgeon trying to get to the hospital to perform a transplant. Think for once that your actions may actually cost another person. Now that that has been established stuff off to the left where you belong as per the rules of the road

People like Tachyon shouldn't be on the road if they can't even follow the basic highway code.

Then he is still not allowed to speed. So stuff your foot off the gas and slow within the speed limit where you should as per the laws of the country.

People that speed should not be on the road. They cannot even follow the law.

So you would have a person die because you feel it's your right to sit in the fast lane even though it's against the law - what are you smoking?

I used that specific scenario because I had to drive myself to hospital while having a heart attack and some ********* with your mentality almost made me not reach the emergency room. I hope you experience this some day so that you too may know and understand there is a farking reason for this law.

It's not your job to enforce the speed limit on other vehicles by hogging the right lane. It's your job to keep left (by law), and let anybody who speeds get caught by the authorities. We all know that our cops are at least good at that.

With knobs like you, I generally overtake, pull in front of you, and slow down to see how you like it. When you move over to the left (where you belong) to try and overtake me, that's when I'll increase my speed again. You're not the only one who can enforce the rules.

^ Load of bull****. A person who is speeding is in the wrong. A person who is driving at the speed limit is in the right. End of story.

Driving 100kmph in the right lane - I agree with you. Driving 120 - I disagree. Nobody has the right to break the law. That includes speeding.

the law also states to move over when you're not overtaking

I do move over. I don't speed. What I'm against is people who drive at 140+kmph, who weave and drive recklessly, tailgating and flashing their lights.

Do you have any idea how much you endangered everyone else on the road by getting in your car and driving while having a heart attack? Even more so by speeding. How many other people could you have killed if you lost control of your vehicle?

This is the type of selfish **** I talk about. YOU wanted to save YOUR own ass and disregarded EVERYONE ELSE's safety.

I do not mind that. At least it gets you to slow down for a bit.

It is not your job to enforce the lane people drive in. It is your job (by law) to drive within the speed limit and let those driving in the "wrong" lane get caught by the authorities.
A person speeding is in the wrong. It is not that person's responsibility to enforce driving in the correct lane for whatever reason. Leave that to the authorities and go race on your XBox.
