Why Engagement Rings Are a Scam

In the Netherlands I know that people are more acceptable towards other things than rings when it comes down to engagements. Like wearing a bracelet, earrings or any other memorable item. Then again, these people don't actually always get engaged in order to be married, they usually end up living together.

Awesome. I should go stay in the Netherlands then. Maybe I'm alone on the forum in this regards, but I fail to see the point of marriage. I mean you sign a contract saying, if you fsck up, half your schit is mine. I'd much rather live with my girlfriend permanently than marry her.

doesn't take much to convince me a ring has no value whatsoever. i rather an appliance for the house or something of that nature. my husband gave me an engagement ring and i was really disappointed to be honest, i needed a new washing machine. he has since learned that is what i rather have than a big party or ring.

I must agree although I'm willing to settle for a very cheap ring instead of nothing and then maybe pay in a bit on the washing machine...

You're not the only one. It's pretty crazy that so many people think signing a contract where one party has absolutely no accountability and can take half your stuff if she suddenly "feels unhappy lol", is a good idea.

engagement rings and everything to do with weddings are irrelevant and another way to suck hard earned money out of people, it just completes a fairytale for us to tell but it really means nothing :) I would do away with it...but maybe after I have mine :D

There are legal benefits to being married. It doesn't mean that you have to get married in COP anyway, that's what prenups are for.
 
Guys I know its not perfect but the average person asking to see the ring wont have a cooking clue. you also have lab grown diamonds ad others that are cheaper.

And with the number of marriages ending in divorce, it would be wise to have a prenup.

As long as you tell your fiancee that it's a cubic zirconia. You do not want her to find out from the nosy friend who's going to do a thorough examination of that ring :p

Yurp. Happened to a person I know. He had a prenup and the court said "Not good enough buddy, you're going to be paying a large amount of money to her."

If you're referring to romance as in buying a chick a debt-creator of an engagement ring - then yes. It doesn't take a ring to be romantic.
