Don't look like you do. I less than 5 minutes I had configured a wifi lan without problems and without qualifications
 
Have the OP tried a simple router or switch in between the two PC's?

Preferably a router with DHCP enabled.

Can be that the OP is wasting his time with the incorrect LAN cable (straight instead of crossover) or that one of the NIC's doesn't like the speed of the other NIC. (Yes I have had that issue).

Have frequently set up new PC's without them blowing at me, they just connect and all works. Linux, Win7, Win8, Win10, OS/2 etc....

I think also a router or switch is the best way to go.

This is the first time in a very, very, very long time that I connected two PC's directly.
 
@OP, I'm curious, can you please post the 2 workstations IP's and subnet on here....

Also, is network discovery turned on. Are you allowing windows to manage workgroups?

Also, you are talking about the Microsoft MCSE cert, right? :whistle:

To those trying to help and beans, i thank you i'm obviously tired and worked up about not getting this to work as i have tried many solutions to no avail.

Beans yes to all, and yes it is microsoft mcse, that was long ago and i stopped working in the industry many years ago. never had this problem on previous windows versions, anyway will again double check just to make sure, but right now i just feel like going the adhoc wireless route, finding a good quality usb cable so i can extend one of the wireless adapters as perhaps a very slight perhaps something is wrong with my cat 5 cable or one of the adapters. ip adresses /subnet is not at fault thanks.

Easier to blame Windows than to do it the proper way and troubleshoot, eh?

Been troubleshooting long enough, making a simple connection should always be very simple. and it's definately worth blaming the OS in many instances, especially microsoft software, sometimes the alternative is the better solution, especially in the game of IT when sometimes the alternative is cheaper than finding the cure.

Possibly my cable i have is bad as it is a cheap 15m cat 5 cable. i will test the cable next week when i'm back at my station to make sure it if it really is.

Thanks all, i'm marking this as sorted as i no longer have it it me to beat this battered horse which will possibly have it's answer after i test the cable next week.. SO...

I now bought a quality gold plated usb extension cable, and am now happily adhocing away... :D Thanks.

Windows 10 has never given me an issue with the home network, and I haven't even set up a Homegroup. Don't blame Microsoft for all your issues.
