Why have kids?

Regardless of the personal pros and cons individuals feel about having children:

To have raised a child:

- gives you insight into human psychology/emotions
- gives you respect for what it takes to produce an amiable, content and healthy human
- gives you insight into the complexities of relationships
- gives you insight into the spiritual development of the human

Children:

- challenge you emotionally
- teach you to control your default reactions
- teach you to be patient
- teach you to see life honestly

Children as teens and older:

- challenge you emotionally on a higher level
- challenge your pre-conceived ideas about society
- challenge you intellectually
- challenge your patience and understanding
- bring new knowledge/data/education into your life
- bring new technology into your life
- bring technological skills into your life

Have a nice day folks :)

+1
There is a lot to be gained from children and the experience of raising them.

talk about challenging. we went to a workshop called "know your child". It was great to interact with other parents, share experiences and understand some of our kids behaviour. And even more important how and why we react in certain ways.

I have asked all my friends this question and have never received a decent/logical reply.

Why have kids? What is the purpose of it? Why do you want to have them?

Don't give me this typical BS answer, "To continue the family name." unless your name is fecking Einstein or Copernicus.

I would rather adopt. Having kids one day might be cool. Sharing in someones life, helping them grow, and the proud feeling when they feel happy. I'd do it for that. :)

what if we don't believe in god ?
what if God is not the God, but far from the original concept ?

Most need a reason to do what they do. Why are we here? Whats our purpose?

A single word/name provides a comforting answer (God), by believing in something that we have never seen or heard, a great "magician" a "wizard of oz" that has some great "plan" and can never disappoint, we can answer all these unknowns with one word, without requiring any understanding or logical reason. Sadly this does not work well, as people then choose to follow blindly and there are many out there that exploit this for their own gain.

There may or may not be a God, he/she may be good or evil. I simply reached a point where I need conclusive proof he/she exists and if he/she is that great then he/she knows this and I will not need to explain myself at the pearly white gates in the end for he/she surely in all his/her greatness already knows my answers.

so you saying just **** to procreate. that's irresponsible without properly thinking about it before hand as we have enough problems with people who get children who shouldn't have, because they couldn't afford them.

Sadly yes, irresponsible yes, we're doing it "like they do on the Discovery Channel", we're just animals programmed to survive.

Knowledge is truly the greatest weapon, it's what divides us from the animal kingdom, educate the masses and we will divide the beast from the human. Educated people are less likely to go around procreating irresponsibly knowing/understanding what the consequences are.

talking stage magic here ?

Not really, people need magic in their lives, a little hope, that the guy will rush up in the last second to the airplane terminal and swoop the lonely girl off her feet.

The belief that God exists brings hope and strength to millions/billions. Believing that all this heartache and pain is not for nothing, that in the end God waits for us in ever lasting peace and happiness. I've seen (maybe you have as well) what this belief can do when used for "good", sadly it makes for an even better weapon.

They say the Devil's greatest trick was convincing the world he doesn't exist, I tell you man's greatest trick was convincing you God does.

I fully support and believe that:
Responsible adults should be allowed to have kids and women should be allowed not to have a child.
The right to have kids should be removed from anyone that mentally or physically harms a child.
The right to have kids should be removed from anyone unable to provide basic needs to a child like food, water, shelter, love... give them what the need but NOT always what they want!
Every child deserves a fighting chance (In the past hunting and bush survival skills is what we needed to survive the jungle) today it's education, tertiary education is needed to survive in this concrete jungle.
Kids should be planned, like building a house, its a 18-22 year plan. Large families are fine as long as you can provide for all but remember you may think you do but mostly parents never love all their kids equally.

Having kids will always be a selfish act, please don't be selfish when growing them up!

And remember, play safe if you not ready!

I had a child to keep my family going forward into the future, that was one of the reasons seeing that no-one else is prepared to have a kid...
But more than that, I had my son to pass on my legacy, simple as that...

I'd like to have children to be a good father and role model. To love them and care for them and teach them, to give them a good life. Before I'm able to do it I need to fix myself first, but there's hope some day :)

Not to me it doesn't. Snapshot of the stats since I loaded the page a minute or so ago - 186 born, 62 died.

Could be a bit wonky then. My screenshot is posted below, taken after a minute. The world population counter also decreases.

Strange, Mike. Here's mine:

Regardless, global population is growing.

*edit* I think I see the problem with yours - it's displaying a list. So 1) 259 people born, 2) 172 people died, 3) 184 000 tons of co2.

I'm puzzled as to why you think i might be joking :erm:

In what way have people made the earth a better place? And how would an ever growing number of people help in any way?

Well, i would teach them all the basic values of respect, kindness, forgiveness, humility etc. That's basic human qualities and goes a long way. Even if they do just that, it would be great. Other efforts like joining philanthropic organisations. I myself, would like to join an organisation of such someday. Small things go a long way.

Quite possibly could be a problem, but the population counter still decreases and our figures after 1 minute still differs.

I agree that the population is increasing, that can't be denied.
