I have asked all my friends this question and have never received a decent/logical reply.

Why have kids? What is the purpose of it? Why do you want to have them?

Don't give me this typical BS answer, "To continue the family name." unless your name is fecking Einstein or Copernicus.

Having children has been one of the greatest pleasures and most serious responsibilities of my life so far.

Because of the love, joy and friendship they bring to your life.

It's one of those things that you can never answer until you have actually experienced it.

Having these little tykes around brings such a sense of joy to your life that you can never imagine what life was like without them.

We had always only planned to have two kids (at least I had), but when the third was born I could never imagine what life would have been like without him.

He's a cute little guy, funny as all get out, says the damndest things, and to see his mannerisms and features that remind us of his parents and grand parents is a miraculous thing.

To see them grow up and learn and accomplish things is a great pleasure. To teach them what you know is a great privilege.
To know that they will always be there for you through think and thin gives me hope.

to imagine what old age would have been like, just the wife and me... with no heritage to look back on... and no kids around in our old loneliness is just too depressing to think about.

Because condoms are not 100% effective...

So it is a selfish thing...you want to bring more people into an overpopulated planet just so that you can have MORE love, joy and friendship. This is not an attack on you, just an observation.

I find that my partner gives me more than enough love and friendship. :)

Wouldn't a dog or a cat have brought you responsibilities? There are so many things that bring responsibilities.

You aren't raising your dog or cat to be contributing citizens of the world. You don't mold them into respecting, diligent, intelligent, curious individuals and watch them blossom. I can understand why someone wouldn't want children - they restrict you, they cost money, they disrupt your lives... But as Gary said, there's really nothing more rewarding that you'll ever do in your lifetime.

The problem of overpopulation is only when those who are brought in are a dead weight to society. That is the result of uneducated, unqualified parents who just breed without the ability to raise the children they bear. Isn't it worthwhile to be able to raise people who contribute something of benefit to society?

It's a rather substantial part of the human experience that's... erm... worth experiencing. If you feel an urge to procreate, and you are half capable of actually looking after a kid, I think a life without children would be incomplete. If you don't, then don't. And keep the numbers down, will ya...

Genesis 1:28, God told us so.

Yeah... meet the Duggars:

Just go visit an old age home on a Sunday and ask the people there where their kids are.

There's your answer ... try it and then ask this question again. More like why have sex?

well, there really aren't any objective reasons imo.
procreation is a moot point.
preservation of wealth is a moot point (depending on your social status).

the world has changed and having kids nowadays imo is mainly for selfish ends:
- you feel feel happier if you conform to perceived social pressures
- you like the idea of somebody looking out for you when you get old
- your partner wants kids and a happy partner makes you happy
- you think kids will impart purpose, significance and affirmation in your life

i guess there's no inherent problem in being selfish.
there's also the biological urge to procreate, and while biology isn't an excuse for behaviour, it does motivate it.

Most parents also don't want to bring another terrorist, rapist, murderer, alcoholic, heroin addict or dictator into this world, but it happens.

I'm actually not sure what you're getting at with this. Nobody is forcing you to have children. Maybe the world would be a better place if you didn't. So be content with your choice, I certainly don't want to persuade you out of it.

Just what is says. People that have a kid like that probably wishes, "I wish I never had kid(s).".

I guess nobody is forcing me.
I think that the second statement is a bit rude.
I am content with my choice.

I wanna have children, and it makes sense if I have children, I'm genetically fit, attractive, tall, intelligent, have no hereditary diseases (ok, there's kidney issues, but I might be lucky here... :p).

However, I'd only have children when I'm more than capable of looking after them :).
