Why have kids?

The only reason I would consider having children would be to give the human species a fighting chance against the retards who are flooding the gene pool. The other consideration is whether I actually care what happens to the species after I'm gone.

You can take a horse to water, you cant force it to drink. Anyhow, I never said that I wouldn't love my son if he became a beach-bum, in fact, it suits his personality. At 16, he is very happy-go-lucky and is an awesome kid. However, like ANY parent, we all have hopes and dreams for our children and want whats best for them. Even though I know what we dreamed for him is likely not a reality, being a 35yr old beach bum still living at home makes him a little less likable. :D

And seriously, a child's personality or the way they "turn" out has absolutely nothing to do with the way they were parented.
There are millions of good children from good families that have gone bad!

it was more to do with satanboy taking your story as an example of why to not have kids :D i agree, i mean my parents raised me christian and i am no longer christian, but then they fought a lot and gave me a lot of drama in their life which i didn't need to deal with at such a young age. kids are sponges, they suck up everything that happens around them. even if our children don't become who we saw them as becoming, we can still give them behaviours and all the skills necessary to deal with life :)

I don't blame @satanboy for not having kids. Judging by his nick, I would say it's good he doesn't have kids. can you imagine seeing 5 little diabloses(sp?) running on the streets?

This.

How does anyone outside the family know whether it is really a good family? Children do have inherent propensities, but how they get treated over the long term does have an influence.

I agree. I honestly hate to say it but crappy people are generally the result of crappy parenting. I find it hard to believe that someone raised with a good balance of love and discipline wouldn't become a good person in the vast majority of cases.

I hate to say it because people who weren't raised well themselves can't be expected to know how to raise good kids. But then again this is my main reason why most people shouldn't be parents.

Agree 100%

Parents dont fight , but argue occasionally, not big drinkers, children are seen to, cared for, well schooled, have opportunities, not abused in any way Etc etc.
Yet so many of those kids simply implode, and go off the rails completely. Why?

Because parents too often dont know when to stop being parents.

Yes, this is what I mean, although its unfair to state that all children who grow up in tragic circumstances will always amount to nothing. There is someone on this forum who is currently defending a friend (who killed 2 little girls) because he is a nice guy (and sadly, he probally is a hell of a nice guy). Sounds like he comes from a decent enough family. You can all say what you like but you just cannot predict how your children will turn out, no matter the love, guidence etc you show. It can be a huge disappointment. We have 2 children, raised EXACTLY the same, disciplined the same, treated equally yet they are total opposites, the one more serious, academically inclined while the other a total free spirit.

Anyway, Satanboy asked a question, I just answered truthfully because I could hide behind my monitor. Its not something I would admit freely or actually say outloud. Im a mother who very much loves her children, would die for them and really should not be having these kinds of thoughts. I suspect Im not alone though. :)

yes, I do wonder if there was more to life than this. :)

The eternal questions associated with mid-life   (i assume so with a teenage son :o)

We all go through this at some point, at 47 i have a g/f and 3 dogs, and sometimes yes i also wonder if i had married one of the earlier women who wanted children (i never did and still dont) how different my life would be.
I could say i am on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, however we all wonder about these things from time to time, its normal.
Dont knock yourself over it. :D
