Why I ditched my mobile operator for Telkom

I'm very much of the same opinion. it is a love hate relationship between the fixed line monopoly and the mobile provider side. I switched from CellC to Telkom mainly because no one's network can be worse than CellC's and I have to say, for everything Telkom does wrong, their mobile network is genuinely good.
 
Good article. However I don't think Telkom unlimited data is working with MTN and their coverage sucks. You can be disappointed on this aspect. But at least you get SMS poping up on the highway every time when home network is not available and your active data bundle do not support roaming. ;)
 
When there is Telkom network calls are very clear and you get good data speeds. Unfortunately for me signal at home is very iffy. I get a lot of missed call notifications as a result. Planning on moving after my contract is up.
 
I'm in the same boat - even did that tarrific questionnaire where they will find you a better deal, and it came back with that they couldn't beat my Telkom deal.

They have done away with the on-net and off-net data bundles, there is now only one bundle that supports Telkom and MTN. The only time they do not allow you to roam is with some of their "Fixed" wireless deals, typically the LTE Unlimited and non-unlimited deals
 
I'm with telkom, coverage sucks so never come off MTN roaming. Does FNB still let you buy phones and pay it off? Then you can stay on prepaid. Or hang on for 3 months and buy the phone at half the price.

He might still be on an older contract that has that restriction. What I do like about Telkom mobile is, when I switched over to prepaid all my remaining minutes and megs came with. I've not had to recharge my phone for a month and a half and I've got minutes till August.
What I don't like about them, they are incredibly useless on getting phones in stock, also you have to go in store for just about anything, want to cancel in store, want to upgrade in store, want to change something minor in store. For an upgrade you require all documentation again, ID, address, bank statements and payslips. Where as Vodacom I could do most things online.

Are you going to move to an area with better signal?
 
I switched from Vodacom and a bill of over R1000pm to Telkom and now get billed around R210pm for what is essentially the same package.
Coverage is good, support (in store) is good and had no issues thus far.

The only problem I do have is my S5 not being compatible with their LTE network :( only found that out after switching.
 
I am on Telkom prepaid. R50 airtime lasts me the whole month.
 
My endless summer 5gb/month (TM netwoork only) data ended last month, since then I've parked my phone on MTN roaming, hopefully this helps with call quality. Telkom does provide amazing value though. Even with only 1gb/m now, I don't see any operator beating my deal.
 
Agree with the last point. I really like their "big deal of the month" but they wanted to go thru all my details again to add it to my account. Why can they not just call up the details they've already captured and just verify? Otherwise quite happy with them. Good value for money.
 
Very entertaining article. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Personally I am with Vodacom. I want the best network experience so this is a non-negotiable. Vodacom has the resources to pump in billions into their network and it shows. I get Lte reception pretty much everywhere I go. There is a perception that Vodacom network is expensive which is true but only if you don't know how to play it. I am on prepaid - I bit the bullet and bought an iPhone 6s 64gb cash. I am on the 79c per minute per second billing package. I pay R79 for 1gb data (bought in advance for a year). Best of all, I buy my airtime with a 40% discount with eBucks. So my cell phone is virtually free every month. This works well for me.
 
Telkom is the Boss, the last time I was with MTN I incurred a R2700 bill due to their OOB rates, with Telkom you reach your data limit, you get cut off and given options on how to proceed.
