why I don't miss DStv.
I moved out of my parents house in 2007. I did not have DSTV, and torrenting had not really become a real option as bandwidth was too expensive in SA.
I had some friends who would download series and we would all share around at University.
in 2010 I started working, the house I was staying at did not have DStv, and it did not have internet. so I got myself a 8ta dongle with the 60 plus 60 yearly data bundle on it.
we started downloading the series we wanted to watch, and watching things at home. There were never any add breaks, so things we much better.
I was however really missing sport.
in 2013 we moved into our own place, and we got ourselves a 2meg telkom line. it was not the best, but it was the only real option due to the area.
at first we were downloading torrents, until a friend told us about Kodi.
at that stage my mother was already using VPN and watching the US Netflix and Hulu. so a 55 year old primary school teacher living on her own could figure it out, so can anyone else.
We got Kodi set up, and we were immidiately stunned at the amount of options we had for series.
In 2014 I started to really miss watching Cricket, something I had done from a young age. I found a useful thread on the myBroadband forum on how to stream supersport though Kodi, but not long after I found it, the stream stopped working, every time the stream would get fixed and posted about in the thread, it would break again.
I started looking for other ways to stream sport. that is when I found the crictfree.tv streaming site. from time to time it gets taken down, but then the url changes but the streams are back up and running.
I watched the 2015 rugby world cup like that. I saw Japan beat South Africa, though a 2 meg line and a web browser.
for the New Zealand game, I was not home, so I did a bit of research and found filmon.tv as an android app.
loaded it on my tab, got a bit of data on a TM sim, and streamed the game while sitting in an airsoft field in Roodepoort.
by the time the cricket world cup rolled around I had found my way around crictfree so well I was watching all sorts of things.
Darts, cricket, rugby, the curry cup, IPL, the CPL, English premiere league soccer, it did not matter. my little 2 meg line and my mini pc was handling it quite well.
From time to time we go to the Fiance's parents house. they still have DSTV, and while hanging around and doing nothing I sometimes put it on. and I have to say the experience is appealing.
the satellite quality is simply not good enough. there is buffering, sometimes lag between sound and video, there is no real way to simply watch 10 episodes of the simpsons in a row. and the ads!
you try and watch a 20 min episode, but your viewing experience gets interupted by DStv advertising itself. litrally selling the service to the people who already own it. because that is where you get new sign ups right?
is it nice to watch the cricket on DStv? no not really, if it rains I have to connect my phone to their wifi, stream the game on my phone and cast it to the TV anyway.
DStv, is simply not worth the money.
paying for a faster line, and a decent capped package, a netflix and a showmax account, and a sky sports account is cheaper, more reliable, and the best part is, because you pay for the service, you dont get ads.
