Something I can't understand.

MWeb start the uncapped war and come in with some really fantasic offers.

Afrihost come to the party with some fantastic offers too.

Some how Afrihost is seen as the hero and MWeb are the devil? Why?

Afrihost have said they have a 200GB limit (which is huge anyway) and MWeb don't appear to have a concrete value of what the limit (if any) is.

Can someone explain why MWeb take so much flack for their services while other ISPs seem to be untouchable.

If MWeb came up and said, here is uncapped but you have a 200GB limit they would have been slaughtered but someone it is okay for Afrihost? I really don't understand.

Just wondering :D

Where did you get that idea from boswald? People are happy about both.

Personally I'm happy about the AH announcement, but not so happy at the fact that I have to wait a few weeks for a 512k account. That might sway me to go with Mweb, as the R2 saving isn't significant enough to wait for.

boswald, perhaps PM Garryvdh, ask him what is wrong with MWEB

although i agree, kudo's to both companies, we needed this...

I will be signing up with Openweb/Mweb today as Afrihost have no smaller speed offering as yet.

Just a thought but if Afrihost didnt come with R29/GB adsl a few months back, would Mweb have come with uncapped now? Afrihost were the first to bring us affordable bandwidth

i think most forumites are loyal to afrihost because they started it all off with their R29 per gig offerings last year, that and what has happened since all started with AFRIHOST.

plus i think there service aint that bad (looking at the forums, i'm not an afrihost customer yet...)

Thanks for the post :)

Everybody likes the underdog.

Loyalty don't mean crap if the company is out of touch with the current trends and cannot provide an affordable service to the customer. The customer is almost right 100% of the timem therefore it's imperative one should take not of what people are saying.

Also, it's important that people also read carefully and understand what they are getting into.

Every single ISP that offers "uncapped" in the world has a fair usage policy. If you download more than 500GB a month you need to get your head checked....

let people use what they want to.
thats what uncapped is!!!

Actually you mean that is what unlimited is for but easy to confuse the 2.

Well mweb's reputation proceeds them i think.

Yes, but it applies to other users aswell. If you hog all the bandwidth, others can't use as much as they want to.

Simple...

Or the ISPs could upgrade their networks to cater for demand...

That costs time and money. Not all ISP's can do it.

Then again it's the mentality of the users too. Only 5 % of the userbase screw it up for everyone else. Because it's uncapped, in Europe MOST of us don't abuse it.

Have you ever heard about/been ro germany?

They have roads called the autobahn, which has no speed limits, yet there are so few accidents there. It's the mentality of the road users that matters.
Imagine you have no speed limits in this country? I KNOW that in Africa it will be a hellstorm. Not saying that Africa is uncivilised, but look at the rest of the world compared to here.

We're a long way from mexico fellas....

there are several reasons why people are cheesed off with Mweb...

1) It all has to do with how Mweb treated users in the past. The last time they had a local uncapped trial, they came down fairly heavy on those that they considered "abusers" , but they never set any limits in the first place. They were very vague and often gave contradicting statements about the service.
2) They are perceived to be a Mom and Pop ISP... and as such they have been known to take advantage of people who don't know any better. They overcharged people on ADSL prices for years.
3) They belong to Naspers/Media24 - that evil company that also owns Multichoice.

And when it comes to Afrihost, they are the little underdog company that started the 2009/2010 price wars by slashing prices down to the R30 per Gig level.

So ja... it's because of a lot of past history. :D

I think the post above nails it. MWeb have a past history of not really meeting customer needs. It's gonna take more than uncapped to restore their imagine in some people's minds.

I also want to comment on the 200GB "cap" (fair usage) that Afrihost mention. I love Afrihost because they are up front with their customers. They tell it like it is. Just read their FAQ on the uncapped offers and you'll see what I mean. They don't mind telling people to expect higher contention. They don't mind openly stating what they feel is meant by "abuse" and how it will be dealt with. I spent 2 days trying to figure out what MWeb's usage policy was, I'm still not sure. Rest assured MWeb's TOS includes a fair use policy. That means MWeb too have an upper limit of what they'll accept as usage (ALL ISPs do). They're just not up-front about it.

Thus for me Afrihost remain the heros
