Why IS is GREAT!

Geek at least with IS we can download 30 gigs and not 3 , 3 gigs wont last me for than 1 week

I'm getting 54k/sec (dsl384) on a bittorrent download with a saix account - it's always been like this.

What a waste of time, either way.

I have gotten a similar speed on my saix accounts for local torrents only. I have found that an international torrent does not want to run faster than 30KB/sec on saix accounts. You can imagine my surprise when my IS account which had been badmouthed for its poor international access exceeded the 30KB sec barrier and gave me a solid 50KB/sec internationally.

BTW I'm on 384 also.

I just tried Skype on an IS account, its much clearer than saix

The only reason not to get IS is if you are going to be playing on local SGS servers.

Have to disagree with you buddy, i get pings in the low 20's on SGS servers, mostly cs tho...

the point is if you use your adsl connection for the sole purpose of playing games online, then you are in desperate need of a life. for the vast majority of people who do have a life, and use their adsl connection for everything else the internet has to offer, IS is the way to go. an unshaped connection really makes a big difference, especially when it comes to voip and p2p. i believe the only people who will still bitch about this are the ones who were suckered into an saix mweb contract, or those who are in need of fresh air away from sgs. how can someone comment on how great saix is, if they've never even tried IS

I canned our IS ADSL account as 99% of our traffic is regular HTTP, and for that, SAIX is king. During the day, I was getting 2-3KB/sec on IS whereas with SAIX it's 80-90KB/sec. Admittedly IS was a lot quicker at night, but still not as fast as SAIX.

For web browsing, I've found SAIX ADSL be as good as IS's 1:1 fibre service. Probably because all the pirates have moved to IS's network. :p

I use SAIX at home as well and have a torrentbox overseas, so P2P speeds aren't an issue for me.

IS rocks!

IS does rock, make not mistake, but its better for a home connection than a business one that can be used after hours.

Of the 100 000 ADSL subscribers, I'm sure IS has at lease 20 000 of those. However as of FEB 2007 IS only has a 1GB international satelite pipe, so realisically speaking, as time goes on and more people migrate to IS for various reasons, we are all going to spend a lot of time waiting for international stuff, while SAT3/SAFE get utilised less and less because its too expensive.

This does not make any sense, and unless telkom wakes up soon, the only time we are going to be talking about SAIX is when we tell our grand children the history of in the internet in SA.

And they won't be interested!

ditto :D

At work we have a 512k line through MWeb - skype kinda works...
At home i have a 192k line through IS - skype is a dream!!!

What doesnt make sense to me is, when people say that satellite bandwidth is more expensive than the sat3 bandwidth, why do IS use satellite bandwidth for the international bandwidth portion of adsl, but their dialup/isdn use the sat3 for international bandwidth.

I am not saying you are wrong, there are more people that say the same to me in real life, it just boggles my mind, thats all.

Well since ADSL uses more bandwidth, they have to use other means than going throughTelkom and the fiber links (Too expensive). But dial up users don't use or can't use much so its more cost effective to just send that through telkom and keep their sat connections that much more uncongested.

I hear what you are saying but i think the situation is a little different - let me explain:

Yes consumer satalite services are VERY expensive - but if you look at the market that they are servicing... its a niech market. There are many other 'last mile' solutions that are much cheaper. You really have to want sat - and you gonna pay for that.

On the other hand ISP sat connections are in a different arena. They're buying in bulk which obviously changes things but they also have only fibre links competing with them - therefore there is probably a much bigger uptake of such services and therefore economies of scale. There are probably many countries that don't have sat3 cables lying around and use large sat pipes for their core connections.

You follow?

Well..

I find SAIX and IS both give me full speeds on torrents. IS seems to provide good local access - pings wise. But I have to say, IS international browsing absolutely SUCKS compared to SAIX. It is so slow it feels like I am on dial up!

I wait forever for web sites to open, and yes my account is not soft capped yet. The only option for me is a 1x Saix Account for international and a 1x IS account for local downloads.

IS are currently experiencing a major degradation of International Satellite Access Service between their Rosebank and New York PoPs. IS engineers are working to
resolve.

Killer, we do offer a 10GB Shaped SAIX account + 3GB IS Account solution for R548 p/m. This brings you the best of both worlds. And the great thing is, if one goes down, you always have the other to fall back on....

*Sigh* Do u honestly believe that the network will get any faster if some people leave and join IS... The network is not being used properly and since 1nov its even less congested. ignorance...

Then telkom will simply reduce the amount of bandwidth available to SAIX ADSL - or even resell it to IS. Telkom always wins.
