Why is Microsoft punishing me for upgrading my CPU?????

Let me first state that Linux is not an option for me, I have tried Ubuntu, SUSE and Fedora. none of them work on my new PC. Linux hardware support is simply shocking (if it is their fault is debatable). Nor can any form of UNIX give me the functionality I require.

Friday I got home all exited, having just bought myself a Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 processor to replace my entry level Dual core. (Damn it is quick) now suddenly Vista x64 tunes me I need to Activate again. Fair enough, I understand that they don't want me installing my OEM license on multiple PC's.

It doesn't want to activate, saying that my hardware has changed and that my Key is already activated. I ONLY UPGRADED THE CPU YOU IDIOT!!!. It's like my car's fuel tank saying: "I won't allow you to refuel because you changed your engine"

I hate you Micorsoft for your ineffectual DRM and WGA programs. What was wrong with the old Win98 system of buying the software, installing the software and entering the CD-key?

I know that if I phone them and scream at some unsuspecting (or maybe suspecting) phone techie, they would probably reset my activation. Fact is, I DON'T WANT TO SPEND 45MIN's ON THE PHONE WITH YOUR SUPPORT DESK!!!

It is far more convenient for me to download one of the many cracks available for your software on the Internet. The fact that it is more convenient for me to be a illegal user of Vista, shows that your WGA program is RUBBISH! It does not work and makes your legal customers lives very very very difficult.

LOL, it doesnt take that long anf you just punch a bunch of numbers into the phone for a machine on the other side, it might ask a few questions, but thats it.

dude... phone m$ activation centre and just tell them you are running ti on one machine they will reactivaste for you. simple as that.

Hwmay times have you phoned them? Even in your situation (been there and done that) i will buy you a beer if you are longer that 6 minutes on the TOLLFREE call.

Oh yes Linux can do. Just a bit more complicated. Anyway, you're running a resource hog.
I couldn't stomach Vista for 2 weeks on my notebook.
 
what are you requirements that linux can not do? not wanting to start a flame or anything just wondering.

The linux kernel supports more hardware than any other operating system. The problem is with the user.
 
Please just phone Microsft's phone activation centre and key in your ID thingy that Vista will give you. You will probably be asked a few questions, like if you INSTALLED NEW HARDWARE and you'll just say yes. It's actually quite fast.

I have the exact same problem with linux though. I think it's something to do with the ACPI or something. But it worked perfectly in VMWare.

I wonder if typing your rant took more time that activating via phone would have.

Thank goodness the person on the other end was English.

Took 13min 45secs to process the thing. last time I had to do this with windows XP it took 45 mins, because the Malaysian guy at the other end had a THICK accent and I could barely understand him.

Guess I overreacted... a little bit.

still it would have been easier to crack my activation. Why can't they improve their automatic activation feature to take into account things like hardware changes? Then activation for my case would take less then a minute.

We've been receiving reports on our forum and through customer service starting last night that Windows Vista validations have been failing on genuine systems. It looks now as though the issue has been resolved and validations are being processed successfully.

I'm assuming Microsoft do that because not having those restrictions would give the pirates too much leeway. What are you using your new monster for?
