Shame poor fishies. Seems like an irregular occurrence, but I'm surprised they could get as close as that to the filters, rather than stopping them with nets earlier..
 
Probably the first time they’ve ever cleaned the filter. Once again, lack of maintenance and we all suffer. So tired of this BS.
 
I'm actually liking the more candid explanation from Eskom....

Lets us do some research ourselves and see whats what.
 
I've swum in the outlet pools. We weren't allowed into the inlet pools due to the problems of being sucked in. It is a common issue.
My boet certified the breakwater for storm surge and we were retrieving measurement equipment.
PS: The water was nice and warm.
 
I remember a story or rumour years ago in cape town when jellyfish had clogged the intake ports and they had to be cleaned out. I don't think it's a new thing. The effect of the loss of a generator is just felt more acutely now.

I think that the board need to acquire an off-site investigative team that specialises in nothing more that purchasing Mercedes, Audi, Porches, and sundry in order to look into the matter that your tax money funds!

Don't know, but there seems to be a correlation between Eskom having to do load shedding and their pronouncements that they must be given more money. On the other hand they have a proven track record of corruption and general incompetence.

Actually sounds plausible that due to lack of maintenance the filters were damaged and no longer working.

Yeah but the aviation industry doesn't and can't realistically have measures in place to mitigate it.

The ageing systems are starting to break down and there's no money to replace/fix them.Band aid on top of band aid.

Actually this is an old problem at Koeberg. Back in the early 90's the company I worked for made some of the equipment they needed to install a bubble barrier curtain at the seawater entrance to the plant to keep the jellyfish out. They don't run it all the time, they just deploy it when needed. Presumably this time they didn't catch on fast enough to an increasing jellyfish population.

Your system description is accurate, but unfortunately sea water doesn't flow though heat exchangers by itself, you need pumps. Pumps have moving parts, so whatever is in the seawater goes through the pumps. Or you put in filters which then get clogged and the flow stops, which is apparently what happened this time.
