Why Microsoft should rethink Windows 8

love windows 8

just wish they included something like expose and spaces (like in mac). tried 3rd party ones and none of them are as good IMO

now that would have been awesome

it works for some and it doesn't for others. We easy to adopting new technologies.

If you are not of geeky disposition, why would you be wanting to learn something new? For no good reason?
No good reason is merely an opinion. And the fact is that there have been multiple radical shifts in the way Windows works, where things are and how it looks. When I moved a non-computer person from XP to Windows 7 I had to show them where everything had gone and the features of the new Start Menu. The fact is that anyone can very quickly learn how to use Windows 8. I understand that some people are just lazy, to an extreme. Those are the people who refuse to ever learn anything new, which is really their loss. The point is that if we pandered to those people there would be no change.

It also has nothing to do with being geeky. Most of the time it seems the supposed computer geeks are the biggest whiners about change.

Microsoft needs to remember that when you force people to make drastic changes to how they do things, the change they choose may just not be the one you want.
So let's advocate playing it safe. That's always been great for progress.

Its funny how anytime somebody criticizes Win8, the apologists always claim it is because we refuse to learn anything new.
It'll probably help if you read the original post.

options are too out of the way, navigation is a chore with a mouse, shutting down is a mission etc.
The options are right there, at least as accessible as they were in Windows 7 (which in my opinion is less than they were in XP). And shutting down is a mission? What, you need three people standing on their heads yodelling while they turn their keys simultaneously?

I don't know what kind of sample group of Windows users you're dealing with, but not one of my family members or friends has been comfortable using the Modern UI.

The options are not right there. If I want to manage my Windows updates I click start, hover on Control Panel and click Windows Updates. Takes 2.5 seconds maybe. Someone without Start8 might try moving the cursor to the top right corner, click on Settings when it appears, examine their options and click on Control Panel, carefully read their options and conclude that Windows Update is not present, change view options, spot Windows Update and click on it. Alternatively you could hover top right, click search, type a sufficient keyword, change search type on the right pane and click on the relevant result. Please man.

The default shutdown procedure is hover top right, click Settings, click Power and choose option. I just click start and shutdown.

I didnt like it at first but it really isnt so bad.

Correct, but we live in a free market, we have free will and there may be options that suit you better than the Windows 8 Modern UI. I must have generated at least $50 of sales for Start8. Every single person I know using Windows 8 prefers having a start button. And don't forget, the Modern UI is just as easy to access. You get the best of both worlds.
