Why middle-aged men must do 40 push-ups

Doing that many over 40 years old?

Too many reps and bad technique will result in possible injuries to muscle, ligament, and tendons. Stupid idea.

Should be perfectly fine to do 10 per day.

Classic case of mixing up correlation and causation.

Being ABLE to do 40 pushups is the key here - not the pushups. The level of fitness and activity, not the actual details of the activity itself.

Piss poor journalism.

Yup.

There was a study a while back showing that people over 60 (or whatever it was) who can no longer get up from the floor by themselves show much higher incidents of dementia etc. than people who could get up. But obviously that's not to say that elderly people should be trying to get up from the floor all day to improve their condition.

There are other ways to exercise

10 per day? That's nothing.

I don’t get this obsession with growing old. We are all eventually going to die.
So what, you don't care either way whether your ageing body is healthy or not because the destination is the same?

It is common sense that if you do some exercise and eat healthy then you will age well. I don't see what complicates it. 40 Pushups is not going to add 1 or 2 years to my life.

Yeah, the article headline is what's stupid here. Nobody's actually suggesting to do 40 pushups to change anything. Confused journo.

Agreed. 40 is not a lot for majority of 40+ age unless someone has a medical issue. If one just starts at 5 a day and ramp up slowly then most will be able to do it within a month. I did it when I turned 40 and I am almost sure I am possibly more sedentary compared to most guys here. :D In fact, this thread motivated me to start (at the bottom all over again- lol) pushups since yesterday.

I don't think it's a lot. Most men over 40 are just too sedentary.

I got into this habit a while back - several elder relatives went through a spate of bad falls causing all sorts of damage from broken hips to fractured vertebrae and I happened to read that one of the best ways to prevent this is developing a push up habit, preferably starting in your forties as it gives you the upper body strength to cushion falls later in life. At first I could barely do one, but resolved to do one more every day, just before I get into the shower every morning.
