Why not SSD ?

Waiting for my PC components to arrive (See signature) I could either spend £125 on a 120GB SSD, or half the price for a 500GB HDD. After looking at my external that survived the trip, still having over 500GB available for storage. And the fact that I can simply buy a 1TB HDD next month, it was a no brainer for me.
Having a super duper CPU and GPU, with like 8GB RAM, that can process data at rates that would make your head spin, mean little if the HDD needs to take 3 seconds to position the read head correctly.

The way I see an SSD, is like having an extra 120GB of RAM that my computer uses to have information ready to go, ASAP. Considering the price, SSD's cost is right in the middle of the cost per GB of RAM and HDD. So it all makes perfect sense to me to spend that extra money.

Anyone who thinks they will store their movies, pictures etc on the ssd need their heads read :D.

As in they need a brain scan? :p

I was advised to get a SSD, and just new it would be a great investment.

I was not mistaken. There is no going back! I've had it for almost a year, and my macbook and old desktop (c2d) feel like my grandma's win95 pc in comparison lol.

However, my pc needs are a bit more complex than just emailing and light surfing...
I mainly using my computer for programming, running as many apps as I can at a time, etc.

Exactly! Well said.

An SSD is cheap RAM, that will dramatically improve the performance of your computer. :D

For a pure gamer, it delivers zero performance increase when it matters. And its expensive.

Basically, first get a good CPU and GPU and only then consider a SSD if you're a gamer. But then again, it has other benefits, like booting fast, that might be valuable to different people.

Ya of course archer but honestly dude, i could never imagine having to boot an old pc up again.

Loading into games faster is also awesome. No more slow ass high end pc.

So you would rather turn down your GFX settings and/or get less fps but at least load into the game fast?

Well i don't only game but i would rather have a slower cpu like 2400 and buy a cheaper mobo to get the ssd. I would never buy a pc again without SSD. I would rather have slower cpu and cheaper mobo than sit without one.

100%! Completely over rated for gamers.

What has gaming got to do with it ? Obviously you not going to get better FPS (although I have read somewhere that some guys claim they get FPS , dunno if its true)

What I'm trying to say is ... day to day usage it's just a great feeling when your machine responds when you want it to. With a normal drive it's like going to your favourite mall and queue for 30mins to pay for your groceries, but with SSD it's like 1 sec ..
end result is the same. You get your goodies, but it's far less fustrating.

Probably a few around here. ;)

Totally agree, the CPU and GPU come first. But then if you are buying the best bang for your buck range of both ( just on the cusp of where the price to performance ratio gets a little weak), and if you have money left over, you might as well buy something that for all intents and purposes will last you for at least the next 10 years worth of upgrades in some way, shape or form.

An Expensive good looking Chassis is not going to help your PC perform as a gamer any better than an SSD will. But people are willing to spend 1-2k more on a case than on the basic box. Both an SSD and a case should have similar longevity I think. So if you can spend that extra money on making your rig look good, you might as well spend it on the SSD as well.

I think where the SSD is nice for a gamer is in those games where you have invisible, dynamic zone transition boundaries. Where it is meant to be seamless. Sometimes crossing those boundaries with the HDD in Sleepy mode is frustrating as hell, that 1-2 second freeze and jerk as the HDD tries to catch up. True it wont happen often, but its the little things.
