I have a Acer Iconia A500. I am happy with it, works like a bomb. But I somehow lost my charger and require a new one. ACER wants to charge R600.00 for a charger. R600.00 Ses honderd Rand!!!! How the hell can a charger cost R600.00?

I'm sure any laptop manufacturer will charge a crazy amount, no need to bash Acer:)

New Dell charger is almost R1000.

We have all been there, so be a man and suck it up.

Nah - I've been using a generic charger on my Acer for ages. Much cheaper.

There is a difference between a generic PSU, made to fit a laptop and a universal where you need to add bits and set voltages...

Is it your first laptop since... forever? That is what those things cost (if you buy them from the manufacturer).

Guys the charger looks like a standard cellphone charge not a fancy laptop charger, that is what is disgusting me. I can't see it being so much more expensive than the run of the mill OEM wall charger.

Ta will try by luck on a generic.

Model number of the laptop?
Also voltage and amps on the old charger.

My reason for not buying Acer is their after market support in general. Mid-2006, I bought what would arguably be described as their flagship laptop at the time (can't remember the model number right now). Was a very nice machine, powerful enough for playing games even. not too long after (think it was mid-2007), I bought a game with requirements well within the laptop's specs. It didn't start, and everything pointed to a display driver issue.
So I head over to ATI's site and download the latest driver, only to be informed that I'll need to get an update from the manufacturer. No worries, I head over to the Acer site, and the latest driver there is the one I had at the time. So I emailed them asking if there's a newer driver. The response was that they feel the driver on their site is sufficient and there won't be an update.
I had to resort to a 3rd party driver (modified ATI driver with manufacturer checking turned off as I understand it). Fortunately those drivers served me fine up to the point where I upgraded and no longer needed the machine for games.

I also have an Iconia A501 tablet. Last time I checked, there was no official ICS ROM for it, despite the fact that it's identical to the A500 in every way except for the 3G modem, and the A500 receiving the ICS update. I ended up flashing the A500 ROM, as I don't really need the modem. The Iconia Tab will be the last Acer device I pay for if I have a choice in the matter.
