Why people text and drive

We are arguing over something stupid here, but let's just say in the off chance that you are pancaked and and able to make that phone call you are gonna wish you had it with you. Similarly once your car is hijacked (the boot along with it) you are also gonna wish you had it with you.

But I'll concede - if you do not have the willpower to keep your eyes of the thing while driving then leave it in the boot. Just don't go make this a law.
Who is agruing?
Placing it in the boot should be a security feature not weak willed.

Leaving your phone in the boot cannot be a law. where will bakkie and suv drivers place theirs?

I do however feel that fines for texting while driving should be doubled from their current rate..

It's the idiot nit knowing how many drivers are compensating for that stupidity by swerving and such.

Well then it is a good thing blind people don't need to look at the phone while texting.

This phone addiction seems to be a real issue though. In our smoking area, people come in and the first thing they do is pull out the phone before even lighting up.

Yes, it is puzzling. Maybe because I don't have a cellphone so can't understand the attraction.

In a perfect world they would impound and/or crush the vehicles. The only thing worse is taxi drivers firing off a quick whatsapp message while driving in the oncoming lane.

Foooook , now that the worst combination of events

What world do some people live in? The amount of information you miss when you divert your eyes/attention from the road in just a second is enough to be killed.

I stress when I just have to find and press the GO button for GPS on my phone :( I even stress when I have to occasionally look at the GPS for confirmation of the route. HOW THE HELL ARE YOU TEXTING?!?!

To be honest I've tried it and it's like one letter every 10 seconds, sometimes longer and the screen locks... I just can't expose myself to that danger as I constantly have to react to everything then. The cars ahead are never at a constant speed and I have to adjust my speed constantly to avoid a problem, not easy when I'm looking at the phone and trying to find the right buttons to spell out a message.

I can understand texting while you are stopped which is ok provided your attention is still on when it is time to move. And for Petes sake not when you are first in line please.

Sure I CAN multitask if I have to but I'm not stupid enough to do it. It's called focus which is what you should be bloody doing on the road.

my response when asked why I did not reply immediately: I was driving.

It is amazing how many people then reply: can you not multi task?

me: not when my phone is locked in the boot.

I do answer calls via bluetooth car kit if I can, but people can also wait for a return call.

They will only say that once with me :p
