Why Telkom is worried

Statistics South Africa’s 2013 Post and Telecommunications industry report reveals why Telkom is moving into new telecoms and IT fields to make money.

One should be comparing their Wireless Data gains against the losses in Fixed Line, and on Net they are actually better-off. I would be considering buying (going long on) TKG.

I wonder why they are loosing Fixed lines? Maybe because they told us they will not be replacing our lines as they see no point as we can just use cellphones

I just wish Telkom would reduce the outrageous prices of fibre line rental. R849pm for 100Mbps is crazy.

Dark Fibre has 100Mbps 500GB for R999pm (incl. line rental)
Fibrehoods has 100Mbps 1TB for R1099pm (incl. line rental)
Frogfoot has 100Mbps 600GB for R1099pm (incl. line rental)
Vumatel has 100Mbps 600GB for R1449pm (incl. line rental)

Telkom offers 100Mbps 250GB for R1529 (incl. line rental), and requires a 24 month contract. All the other providers allow month-to-month.

Screw you Telkom.

This article would have been impressive if it was longer than 2 sentences and didn't state the obvious

The lucky few..

Dark Fibre has 100Mbps 500GB for R999pm (incl. line rental) - DFA do not offer consumer services
Fibrehoods has 100Mbps 1TB for R1099pm (incl. line rental) - Localised, high LSM areas, lower costs and better recovery
Frogfoot has 100Mbps 600GB for R1099pm (incl. line rental) - same as above
Vumatel has 100Mbps 600GB for R1449pm (incl. line rental) - same as above

Comments above.

Telkom's lines are across the country on a higher capital expenditure base, with lower/worse recovery. You simply cannot compare a national fixed line provider with localised, niche players. It's not a fair comparison...

Telkom are about to offer you FTTH.

Why are no other operators willing to do so in your area?

But why doesn't Telkom benefit from economies of scale? The new fibre players are doing a better job hardware wise, with almost all installations completely subterranean. Telkom fibre seems to cast a few main lines out and then pop out the ground onto the phone lines. And the new players are rolling out faster, and offering better upload speeds and speed tiers. What exactly is so much more expensive for Telkom?

Without sarcasm, I'd really like to know why Telkom needs to charge nearly a grand for line rental.

Because we're little old PE? I appreciate the move for its long term benefits, as I assume Telkom can't out-price the middle and lower markets forever. But when I looked up the immediate cost increase my heart sank. A lot. My internet is basically going to double in cost.

I'm still weighing the possibility of not applying for a fibre line until the prices improve drastically. My family is happy with our current setup. I've spoken to my neighbours about the fibre installation, and all of them were horrified to learn what it would cost them to benefit from the higher speeds.

I think Telkom is going to have to make changes when they realise how many people aren't prepared to pay nearly 2 grand a month for internet. Or even 1-1.5 grand for folks with lower data requirements.

Telkom sometimes just loses it. They offered us fiber at one of our offices on a 5 year contract. Told them to hold their dogs. Would rather use a Wisp if there are no other options
