Why WiFi router but no decent modems???

Hi I would just like to know what the point is of suppliers selling wifi router for ADSL lines that do not have a built in modem when there is next to nothing available in the line of a decent DSL modem?

We don't have cable networks to our houses like overseas so there has to be a way to take the RJ-11 ADSL line from your service provider and get it to an RJ-45 cable to plug into a router.

I have been looking at a stack of the latest wifi routers and the majority of the latest and fastest only come in a non-model configuration. WHATS THE POINT!!! or am I being really dense and not looking in the correct places to buy a decent modem to add to the router?

To follow on this is there any benefit in having a seperate modem and router as apposed to a DSL router with modem.

Points and ideas would be greatly appreciated
 
Well a modem is a modem is a modem so the term "decent" is somewhat irrelevant.

The problem is rather that these days a Router and an Access Point and a Repeater all gets boxed as one and the same thing and you simply choose which way you want to configure it.

But I don't know of a single manufacturer that doesn't have a Router + Model combo, so not sure what you mean there?
 
You need to add something like a TP-LINK TD-8817, Netgear DSL-2500U or Draytek Vigor 120 single ethernet port ADSL modems on the WAN ethernet port of those routers.
 
I don't quite follow either.

Most of them have what you're after: ADSL, network connections and wifi...

so you are asking why there are access points or wireless gateways with RJ-45 sockets

because you might want your wireless network behind a firewall solution.

I on the other hand complain that there are not enough MODEM ONLY devices.

-->modem---->untangle/firewall---->switch----> plug in your computers or devices and wireless access point


lets say you have a windows server acting as a gateway

modem with wifi ---> windows server--(internal network)--> office PCs. as you can see the wifi is outside of the office internal network because its integrated into the DSL modem, this is not the best setup, you want the wifi to be protected by the server on the internal network.

make sense?

I certainly agree that it is useful to have a simple CPE that converts ATM over POTS (or whatever other access you have, 3G, Fibre, etc) to ethernet. The key word there is "simple", however. Since this is such a single purpose device, there is less scope for differentiation, and hence, fewer products on the market.

I currently use a DLink DSL2500U, in conjuntion with a TP-Link WR1043ND WAN router, and will happily retire the 2500U when my fibre gets installed, and hardly have to make any changes at all to the configuration of the TP-Link when I do so. Should I then choose to upgrade the TP-Link, for whatever reason, the 2500U or fibre CPE will remain as is.

So yes, to the OP, it adds a little complexity, but comes with gains in terms of flexibility too.

We have a whole range of DSL Routers available in South Africa, if you'd prefer to have a Modem Router as opposed to a Modem + Wifi Router.

ADSL Routers:
DSL-N14U
DSL-N55U

ADSL/ VDSL Routers:
DSL-N17U
DSL-AC52U
DSL-AC68U

A modem modulates digital signals from the PC onto the analog POTS network then demodulates it back to digital for a PC on the other end.


ADSL is digital therefore doesnt need modulating.
