Why Windows 10 October update deleted user files

Microsoft has provided details on its Windows 10 October 2018 update and the issues which caused the software to delete users' files.

"We have fully investigated all reports of data loss, identified and fixed all known issues in the update, and conducted internal validation," said Microsoft.

I dodged the bullet when I updated one my laptops but that being said, thank goodness for backups hey.

What I've learned here is that I am no longer going to manually check for updates (on any device and system). I will wait for the updates to be pushed to my devices, that way I'm not in the "first wave." But that is just how I am going to do it, not saying this is how it should be for everyone.

Linux is starting to look really inviting.

MS can really learn from linux on how updates should be done. The whole repo system is awesome, core components like the kernel will get updated an you can carry on working, reboot once and everything is updated. None of this 5 times restarts after an update and minutes of "Hi, we're getting your system ready for you" and the cnuts managed to delete all your settings

You can even update without a reboot as linux can do live kernel patching.

I was just happy when we could finally update GPU drivers without needing to restart.

Live kernel patching is Ubuntu only I think if non-enterprise via the canonical service? Does Fedora have it? Don't think e.g. Mint has it.

Microsoft updates get messier and messier as the years go by. I updated to this build and none of my files have been deleted (yet).

How can it be ubuntu only when red hat developed it? Live kernel patching is available in several distros. I honestly don't know about fedora as i've never used it.

They choose not to implement it.
From the linux audit site that yours links to:
A note of caution: Kernel live patching is risky. Count on hard freezing or panics to become normal...

The Ubuntu version allows use of Canonical's implementation which is proprietary which seems to "fix" a lot of issues associated.
Note I am just summarizing from what I've read about the topic, I have no clue in regards to live Kernel patching, I am a typical user that just approves most updates and generally shuts down the PC once a week at least.

Tbh, Microsoft's updates have always been messy, just that most other platforms improved in how they delivered while MS stagnated.

If you've completed the update and nothing was deleted at that stage then nothing will get deleted later due to the update. Everything is explained in the link in this mybb article. Good reading.

Just out of interest was this update installed by most of the affected users or was it pushed?

According to the MS blog post it only affected people who manually updated by going to settings and requested the update. They say it was a phased rollout out so hadn't been pushed out automatically yet.

We intentionally start each feature update rollout slowly, closely monitoring feedback before offering the update more broadly. In this case the update was only available to those who manually clicked on “check for updates” in Windows settings.

From the makers of Internet Explorer *shudder*

Microsoft did not make Internet Explorer. Like most things in their catalog, most things are either bought or stolen. Spyglass wrote Spyglass Mosaic and some clever Nut at Spyglass thought it would be grate to licence it for a % of IE's sales.

Microsoft pulled a new one and gave IE away for free.
