I enjoyed this post very much, you're obviously not as dogmatic as Bryn. I'm not a Christian, by the way, I'm not sure what I am but my spiritual awakening is based on A Course In Miracles (http://courseinmiracles.com/) though I know I'll receive a lot of flak here for saying that.

Dogmatic is the opposite of my world view. I don't see anything as completely true - just things that are likely to be true or have been claimed to be true with compelling evidence.

That website and its grammar is appalling at first glance. Also, the opposite of love is not fear - it's indifference. I'll give the site a more thorough look later though.

I'm quite sure you'll be totally unimpressed with it! It was the first site that came up when I did a google search for course in miracles but I'm pretty sure you'll deride them all. I'm glad you liked it. I also don't think the traditional materialist view of consciousness makes sense. But, then I don't think reality is under any obligation to make sense to the likes of me. But, then again I'm not sure it makes much more sense to biologists than gravity does to physicists. But, they have to assume a biological origin for consciousness because that is the only way we have approaching the problem and of course when you turn a brain off all evidence for consciousness disappears.
 
Ja, to my mind you're just reducing the sense of self to a sense of self. What if you changed your mind about absolutely everything at once is there still continuity? Or, is there just a continuity of experience. If so, what happens when that continuity of experience is interrupted by a general anesthetic? I'm just musing out loud.
Yeah - I think there's still continuity in the sense that I can trace back the causal trail of sweets that led me to make the decision to change my mind about absolutely everything. Although ultimately - I don't think I could accomplish what you suggested. My views about slavery, for example, could not be changed by force of will; I couldn't make the choice to take pleasure in keeping people as property or in whippin' dem suckas real good for lookin' at me funny. My stance on slavery is less a temporal flight-of-fancy and more a part of my foundation, part of the principles that have culminated to make me, me.

Nick333 is the sum total of all his experiences. Could you choose to change your mind about god in an instant? I'll hazard a guess and say you'd need to be presented with a transcendent experience (A deity appears!) on one extreme to the much slower route of careful contemplation. And here again - regardless of the rate at which your opinion changes - you're the one who made the decision to change...the you that made that decision would be very hard-pressed to depart from those guiding principles that make you, you.

Hmmm...so continuity / discontinuity in two areas of mind:

1.) In the stuff we're aware of day to day (nice movie, milkshakes!, she's pretty etc.); the denizens of consciousness to which garson007 was referring to...the stuff that changes from day to day.
2.) The crux of who we are; the captain of the ship...the ever-evolving 'I'.

#1 is in flux, and I have no issue with the lack of continuity there; we don't define a cup by it's contents.
#2 is quite stable & provides the kind of traceable continuity on which we can depend to define ourselves from one day to the next.

Most biology students will be able to tell you that neural signals are sent via mechanisms such as synaptic transmission, gap junctions, and diffusion processes, but a new study suggests there's another way that our brains transmit information from one place to another.

Researchers in the US have recorded neural spikes travelling too slowly in the brain to be explained by conventional signalling mechanisms. In the absence of other plausible explanations, the scientists believe these brain waves are being transmitted by a weak electrical field, and they've been able to detect one of these in mice.

"Researchers have thought that the brain's endogenous electrical fields are too weak to propagate wave transmission," said Dominique Durand, a biomedical engineer at Case Western Reserve University. "But it appears the brain may be using the fields to communicate without synaptic transmissions, gap junctions or diffusion."

Running computer simulations to model their hypothesis, the researchers found that electrical fields can mediate propagation across layers of neurons. While the field is of low amplitude (approximately 2–6 mV/mm), it's able to excite and activate immediate neighbours, which subsequently activate more neurons, travelling across the brain at about 10 centimetres per second.

Testing on mouse hippocampi (the central part of the brain associated with memory and spatial navigation) produced similar results, and when the researchers applied a blocking field, it slowed down the speed of the wave.

According to the researchers, this is evidence that the propagation mechanism for the activity is consistent with the electrical field.

"The results indicate that electric fields (ephaptic effects) are capable of mediating propagation of self-regenerating neural waves," they write. "This novel mechanism coupling cell-by-volume conduction could be involved in other types of propagating neural signals, such as slow-wave sleep, sharp hippocampal waves, theta waves, or seizures."

If their findings, which are reported in The Journal of Neuroscience, can be expounded in further studies, it could help us to better understand how brain waves are associated with things like memory, epilepsy, and healthy physiology.

"Others have been working on such phenomena for decades, but no one has ever made these connections," said Steven J. Schiff, director of the Centre for Neural Engineering at Penn State University, who wasn't involved in the research.

"The implications are that such directed fields can be used to modulate both pathological activities, such as seizures, and to interact with cognitive rhythms that help regulate a variety of processes in the brain."
