Hi all,

I live on a small farm and make use of Wirulink's WiFi Internet. I would like to extend the home WiFi with a outdoor omni directional WiFi extender. Does anyone know the limitations (range / speed etc.) and maybe provide assistance with hardware selection?

Ideally, I would like to have a radius of 500m covered.

Thanks!
Victor

Hi Victor

Thanks for using our Internet service.

For outdoor WiFi, we recommend 2.4GHz wireless as the lower frequency works better through trees&schrubs.

Check this out on takealot: TP-LINK Outdoor 2.4GHz 300Mbps High Power Wireless Access Point

Put an ethernet network cable from your main router to this outdoor access point as wireless repeating using a single radio wifi network can cause a lot of problems and speed issues.

Depending on your phone/device and line of sight, you should get between 100m and 200m range in good conditions, with your phone's wifi radio output being the limiting factor.

Out team can also supply and install an outdoor AP for you, so get in touch with our team at [email protected] if you want us to do this for you.

Regards

Riaan

For a radius of 500m you’d need a few AP’s. Let me start by saying that Tp link is not going to give you close to what you’re looking for.

personally I would go with Unifi outdoor units. They’ve got an ac mesh outdoor pro which is rated at 180m... realistically I’d say you’ll be good at around 150m per unit. So I’d place a few of these strategically to ensure my coverage area is good.
You also get the AC Mesh which is good but coverage not what you’re looking for. They do have an add on antenna for it, but then you’re paying more than the cost of the outdoor mesh pro.

budget will help a lot.

Rather setup to a point-to-point link between the 2 locations instead of trying to blast your WIFI signal 500m away.

Yes , use a few routers on a network. If you want a trouble free network, use fiber between routers.

I’ve just recently sold a tough switch which was used for something similar. It was mounted outdoors providing poe to a few ac mesh units. It was not for 500m radius as the property was smaller, however it was a similar setup to why I’d do on the farm but I’d use different devices.
