Wi-Fi opens up the world

With so many people wanting to take advantage of the internet, in it's various forms - ie. like providing the poor with voip telephone calls......I can see the internet grinding to a slow pace, if not to a halt. Voice uses a fair amount of bandwidth, and with millions...if not hundreds of millions of people wanting to use the internet for voip, data, video calls etc.....I hope they have a plan B, in order to support this usage - one way might be to setup a myriad of satellites, to ease the load.

Have an  day...

*waits for the usual deranged wireless mongers to post obsurd statements*

Absurd;)

Ahhh, the inevitable wireless verses wired debate:p.

Both have their uses in the right environments. At work we have a network that is 20% wired, 80% wireless. In an office environment such as this you won't notice any significant differences in speed (speed tests can prove this). The other issue is that wireless opens up a security risk, but with reasonable steps this can also be minimised to negligible.

There's nothing to stop the phones/laptops themselves acting as routers, i.e. extending the fabric of the internet itself. They don't have to be superfast if the mesh is sufficiently well connected.

WiFi More than just a way to connect to the Internet

With WifFi networks spanning virtually most of the populated areas in Pretoria, networks such as PTAWUG (Pretoria Wireless User Group) is becoming more and more popular. Community networks such as these provide a vast range of TCP/IP services at a minimal cost. You connect to the network with no bandwidth cost at all. All you have to do is to buy the equipment to connect and provide a small once off donation. Even more interesting is the fact that the Pretoria and Johannesburg Wireless User Groups are connected to each other ensuring that all users who are connected on the two networks are inter-linked. PTAWUG has, in the last three months seen an explosion of users connecting. New HighSites are emerging on a weekly basis, ensuring even more users have the ability to connect. A network truly built by the community for the community.
More info may be obtained on the PTAWUG web site at : www.ptawug.co.za.

You dont need adsl to join PTAWUG!! Hell, except for online forums and google, who needs internet if you are connected to PTAWUG

:)

I must say, the wireless users groups in South Africa really opens wifi up for people who want to learn more (by "playing") about it. It's perfect to have a test bed of 22 highsites that are interconnected as well as 160 users (thats in PTA alone) if you want to test some new technologies or just see how it works. For me personally - the stuff that I have learnt from being on PTAWUG has helped me in my career - the hardware side and the software side. This is true as well for the people on Jawug, DWC and CTWUG. I hope that the skills and knowledge transferred between people on the wugs will be applied in South Africa as well as the rest of Africa.

Remember voice, in any form, use bandwidth. Though CS voice today is more efficient than PS in bit rate, the nett impact of migrating from CS to PS is not that big.

I recently had very pleasant experiences with the wifi connection in my and my wife's N82's. We spoke for hours (free of charge) while she was overseas using only wifi. The data throughput was a mere few megabytes.

I can definately see wifi/voip killing GSM roaming first.

Remember the BBS before the Internet was available in SA, mid 1990
Digitec and Rob Fischer BBS from Durban (cannot remember the name)
Used Fidonet to send "emails" to the internet in a store forward on system,
till you go to the Internet Gateway ie Rhodes University.
