WiFi bundle pricing

Bully for them... they will prolly get alot of clients at the airport and hotels.

It's expensive for local use, but could be quite useful for international use. I'd definitely use it when I'm overseas.

It's not aimed at the local market, it's aimed at travellers. I want an access point while I am on the road and at hotels. Since it's cheaper than the average hotel cost, they will get clients. I hate that segment myself, but when you need it and the office is paying...
They will get their clients, again, it's not for you and I to use at home...
It's a different package and target market alltogether and shouldn't be compared with ADSL / other local services...

I use CGNET/Ipass which is similar... just alot more expensive.

I had a look at their international locations
At Heathrow they only have 1 location - terminal 3 in a private lounge!

I could not find a WiFi facility in any of the locations in Europe that I normally use

Another lets make a 1000% profit screw you consumer kind of avenue telocoms can abuse...

The prices seem reasonable compared to the other offerings. They can't just suddenly drop prices by 90%...they are a business after all.

How does this compare with international offerings?

I think this actually does compare well with oversees. Can't remember what I paid last year while over in the UK for the WiFi Hotspots, but I think it's very similar. Will do a bit of research to see if I can find something that I can compare it to

Uh... it's an ad-hock user service - not really for the local user but the traveller...

Wait! Let me guess. Telkom ADSL is for travellers also... No, we just getting ripped off as usual. Nothing new. Been there, done that.

Daylight robbery. Reminds of the days (2003) when we first used our cellphones to connect to the internet with GPRS - R43 per MB.

I remember not knowing this and working up a R4500 Vodacom account one month.

It is obvious Vodacom is still trailing this service and do not intend to offer this as a viable alternative to the already overpriced 3G/HSDPA service. I wil stick to ADSL for the time being.

Why not just get a fon Router - then you can get free Fon hotspot access almost everywhere (BT now bundle the fon service with their wireless routers in the UK)

See: http://www.fon.com/en/

A good review of the available WiFi options.

A few small omissions - both MWeb and Telkom ADSL bandwidth customers receive 300 free minutes per month at any of the respective hotspots around the country - this access would normally cost as much as R200. As far as I am aware none of Vodacom's 3G/HSDPA or cell customers get any free hotspot access. The process of obtaining WiFi access is much simpler than for any of the cell 3G/HSDPA services which require the customer to purchase, activate and charge a prepaid SIM. The 12 month window on data bundles from IS for example is a significant improvement over the current 30 day window that all of the cell phone companies offer. This issue has been raised numerous times in the past on MyADSL (data bundle rollover) with no response from the cell networks to date and is responsible for greatly inflating the already high monthly bandwidth charges for 3G/HSDPA internet access.

@reech

There are a few local companies with a similar model to Fon.. with revenue or profit sharing.
Take a look at the offerings from Skyrove, Redbutton and Frogfoot.

Free WiFi at most McDonalds in Europe

Was in Europe last month (France, Belgium, Netherlands, UK) and got FREE WiFi at every McDonalds I saw....

Don't even have to grab a bite (works from the car park)!

Remember that!
