Wifi Disconnecting

So not sure if anybody can help but on the odd occasion, this is the first time it's happened in about 4-6 months, I'll have a day when no matter how many times I reset my modem and how many devices I make sure are not connected and using up bandwidth the wifi will constantly disconnect either my phone, iPad, laptop or just about anything that's on it.

So some important information: I stay in Cape Town, recently switched over to Afrihost but this happened when I was with Telkom as well. On average there's 4 people using a device that's connected to the wifi

The modem we have is the original modems Telkom were giving out when they first introduced adsl which are the Siemens Giga series. We are thinking about getting a new modem as this one is rather old but not sure which to go for and if replacing the modem is actually going to be the cause as I suspect it's the actual infrastructure from the exchange to our house that's the problem.

Below are the daily devices:

3 x iPhones
1 x Samsung
2 x iPads
2 x Smart TV
1 x MacBook

Then the not so regular devices, basically family visiting:

1 x iPad
4 X smartphones (varies between Samsung and Sony and iPhone)

I have a 4mb uncapped package with Afrihost and like I've said this happened a lot more frequently with Telkom.

If anybody has any ideas as to what I can do to fix this please let me know.

Thanks

Why do you think that a disconnecting wifi has anything to do with the infrastructure from the exchange to your house?
Does your modem lose synch when the wifi disconnects?

The modem is fine nothing changes on the modem as some devices stay connected to it perfectly while others will always drop off. The reason I say it's a problem with infrastructure is because every other day there's a technician up the road working at the exchange and I know for a fact it's not installing a new line because there's no space left.

I think there's an actual problem with our ADSL Line we have being faulty because if I login to the PC which is a wired connection there is absolutely no issues with the connection at all. It's just the wifi which has issues and yeah today it's been happening since about 12:25 and only like 2 devices out of the 8-10 trying to connect have never lost connection while my phone, iPad, MacBook and the rest are dropping off regularly in intervals of about 30 seconds to around 2 minutes.

Then when I try and reconnect it asks for the password again and even if that is entered correctly it just constantly asks for it and will not connect. Usually resetting the modem for a minute clears this up but that's not even working.

As I was typing this I had to reconnect to the wifi twice and I'm pretty sure by the time tomorrow rolls around everything will be fine. But yeah I could be 100% wrong about infrastructure it's just a weird assumption I have because we've always been told our Exchange up the road is a bit of a mess

Damn son, bin that rubbish and get something decent.

Oh yeah trust me that will be done shortly. Any recommendations? I mean I don't wanna say price is a factor but like nothing that's going to break the bank. Just something decent compared to this relic

Thanks will check that out. Any opinions on the Huawei HG532F Router one that Afrihost offer that costs R999? I mean it's probably not the best but it can't be any worse than the current one we have

Wifi connectivity is between your modem and pc, phone etc, you started well in your OP by suspecting the old modem, I suggest you start there first and see what happens.

That is very contraditory^^^

You get what I mean though where the wifi is screwed on 8/10 devices but works on the other 2 that can't be "normal" and like I said I guarantee by the time I manage to get hold of anybody to check the line out there won't be any issues because these problems only usually last a day. I do wanna put today's one down to the terrible weather we had last night and a little this morning but that's a massive cop out instead of finding the route of the problem.

I think a new modem is in need regardless

Not sure if any of the following will help but maybe one of you can see if you can spot any problems:

Downstream rate: 5118 kbps
Upstream rate: 509 kbps
PPPoE pass-through: Enabled

ADSL Line

Status: Cable connected
Line mode: ADSL2+
Maximum line rate: 24704 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 23.5 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 5.9 dB (upstream)
Output power: 14.6 dBm (upstream)

Some of us can only dream about those stats so be grateful, very grateful.
Seriously now your adsl line is cable based it's not wireless like a cellphone signal, the only point when you get a wireless signal is from your modem.

Your line is fine.

Yeah I know the stats are amazing but still don't explain why the wifi drops... If somebody has any idea besides the modem being so old I would love to know what it is

And as I mentioned it would fix itself it seems to be back to normal after 4 hours of constant dropped connections

I have that router its very good, telkom have it for R550.

if living in a highly populated area with nearby neighbours, maybe make sure your Wi-Fi signals don't overlap too much - try changing to another channel after checking who else is broadcasting

I only pick up another 3 or 4 connections when sitting in my house so think that should be fine. Yeah I've heard about the channels thing and read that channels 1, 6 and 15 are the good ones. Mines currently set to auto

1,6 and 12

Download the Wifi analyser (actual name) app then you can check if they overlap.

Would it be best to set it to one of the channels and leave it and then if it bugs out try a different one? Also that app I'm guessing it's a PC app?
