Hey guys.

Is it worth it getting a wifi extender? Do these things work and how easy is the setup?

I got this one: http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=414

Works well most of the time. Have to reset it occasionally. It's cheap though so I don't mind.

Setup was easy enough, had to log into my router and get the wifi mac address. Then connect the extender to my laptop via cable, change my lan settings to match it, log on and add the mac address plus the ssid and wifi security settings. That's it. So as you move around your devices will automatically connect to the strongest signal and since it's the same ssid and security settings it's seamless.

Looking at a netgear one as my router is Netgear.

Does it have to be the same brand?

No.

A colleague has a matching Netgear and he's not happy with it. Says he needs to reset the thing regularly.

Hi There,
As has been said they don't need to be the same make. In extending a WiFi it would still be better to connect with cable if possible.
This link has some info on it.
You may also want to read this one if you decide to use an old router with wifi that you had lying around.

Regards

Tim

I have a Netgear Extender and it works about 75% of the time. The other 25% require resets. It is the simplest thing in the world to set up via WPS. You push the WPS button on your router, and the WPS button on the extender. And voila, 60 seconds later it works...

The TPLink also has that but my router didn't so I had to do it manually.

I have wi fi in the house but further away you go from the Netgear base set the weaker the signal. If I have a spare desktop computer can I put it somewhere in the house (obviously connected) with a built in wi fi connector (that one with the aerial) will it make the signal stronger in the house?
