Hey guys

Im hoping somebody can help me here.
I have noticed recently that when I use the Afrihost sim in my TP Link router I struggle to connect to the wifi on my iPhone 5 (and wife's 4S, and her iPad mini)

It will start the loading process and then just hang. I first thought it could be a problem with Apple, but I have done tests with my Acer laptop and it does the same thing. In a browser I will need to refresh and then it will load. Its almost as if the connection is idle and cant jump straight to work. Also just tested it on another Windows 7 machine...

Then I thought it must be settings on my TP Link, so I Googled the settings and frequencies that all my devices will use and it all matches up. I also tested it on a Planet router, same outcome...

I then did a test with a Telkom mobile sim, and a Vodacom sim and the issues disappeared.
This is very frustrating as I will need to disable and then enable wifi on the device every few minutes to connect again.

Any ideas from the clever folk here? I don't want to blame them until I have a better idea of what is going on. The evidence does seem to point to Afrihost being the culprit though...

maybe try a regular MTN sim.

when I used a router to do wifi via 3g I struggled a lot, router did not connect automatically, and all sorts of silly things.

eventually I just got a mifi device and that solved everything

I have a mifi as well, been testing it the whole morning...seems to be working better...

But I want to use my main router for the whole house...

I have a MR3420.

I initially had it setup with the USB dongle being run off a powered USB hub due to the 3420 struggling to power the dongle. However lately, after swapping out my MTN/Afrihost sim for a TM sim, I have had some problems where the data connection (3G) would seem to disconnect or drop after about 30s - 2mins.

Last night I removed the USB hub, and immediately the connection stabilized.

Dont know how/why etc but this seems to have solved my issues.

These things are obviously very finicky.

That is interesting. I have the same router ( I had to check first :D )
So I wonder if this issue is normal? I will do a bit of reading up about this router and see if the issue is known...

When i read up about it the power issue to the USB was the only concern, hence the use of the powered hub. It seems the 2nd gen 3420s are a lot better than the first generation.

I have a feeling its the hub that was causing error some how, but it doesnt makes sense that the dongle is detected and working 100%. When I first set this all up I tried connecting the dongle direct to the 3420. With this setup the 3420 didnt detect the dongle due to the loss of power to the usb port. With the powered hub everything was 100% until last week.

This is all very interesting...

I found similar discussions on MyBB and the web about the same issue. They also mention the power issue of the dongle. I have a 1.5m USB extension in there, I will remove it and test again. I will also see if I can find a powered USB hub to test...but here are a few random findings to confuse me even further:

afrihost sim works well in mifi
Afrihost sim gives hassles with TP Link both cabled and wifi, but mostly wifi
Telkom mobile sim performs well in all scenarios
Afrihost sim even struggled in a Huawei B593

Im even more confused now and not too clued up on all this tech...but will play with different scenarios until I come to a solid conclusion...
