OK did not know that the antenna was in the display panel. Thought it was just sitting on the motherboard. Thanks for the answer.
 
Update to the latest Intel drivers for WiFi and Bluetooth. Change the power saver option to Performance for the WiFi adapter.

Not Intel hardware afaik. Power management done already

No arrogance intended. My wlan is bullet proof, seriously. I know what I'm doing in that regard, and also it's hard to get wrong with unifi ;)

My wife's wlan card shows up as broadcom...

Dell is supposed to identify all hardware correctly based on the service tag, hence my Wtf. It did not pick up any Bluetooth drivers that needed upgrade that I can remember. The wlan drivers it identified did not work.


I'll try the hardware id thing next...

Interesting post.

My dell i7 with win7 also drops the network regularly.

In fact it not only drops my home network - it's not even on the network list!!!

Fucing annoying!!

Looked for drivers before but it always says "up to date" ??

So I'll look at the driver issue again.

Does this happen running on battery only? Had an issue a while back where having the laptop plugged in messed with the WLAN antenna...
 
I got so pissed off with this issue, I now use a wifi dongal.

If doesn't help, try Intel drivers too as suggested it in my first post, other members wrote the same. Your card seems to be a combo with Bluetooth, so also synchronise the latest Bluetooth drivers (from the same Website). Additionally, with Intel combo card, you should disconnect all Bluetooth devices before starting upgrade. I would also try to uninstall current Bluetooth and WiFi drivers from Control Panel before upgrading.

Don't be missled by Dell version numbers. It can be a higher version number than on the Intel Website, while the actual Intel driver inside the package is older. Why they do it, I don't know. I would normally use drivers from Dell Website (when works), as their Bluetooth drivers support additional features like aptX codec license from Qualcomm. However if you need aptX, you can later add a separate package from Dell (after installing drivers from Intel website), it will enable this feature.

I specifically push a matter of synchronising Bluetooth drivers together with WiFi, as with Creator's update, Microsoft made significant changes to the Bluetooth driver structure, old Bluetooth drivers may crash and affect power management of the WiFi component.

those BOIS updates - I'm a little wary about doing them. are they safe to do - are there any issues a novice like me should know?

Normally I do only when having BIOS retated issues, but with recently discovered backdoors in the Intel Management Engine, I suggest to get it updated. Update BIOS and there is a separate update to the IME. Update it then disable IME in the BIOS setup, forever. BIOS aso brings CPU microcode updates to help OS battling Spectre and Meltdown. Dell updates are safe, there is a BIOS recovery facility too. Just make sure a battery is charged at least 70% and don't interrupt once it started.
 
Have updated the Bluetooth package and the airplane mode switch driver.
Let's see how it goes.

Google for the pci vendor and device ID reveals Dell 1504 wireless half card. Unable to find working wifi drivers for it and further investigation confirms Broadcom not Intel.

If this doesn't work I'm buying dongles

Tried, couldn't reconcile broadcom part name to dell name.

I have a sneaky feeling the issue is these cards aren't fully supported with win10.

Even the Dell 1504 driver refused to install.
 
Just for the record, my Intel AC-3165 combo card has also Broadcom BT chip inside. Drivers came with Intel installation package, it is called Intel Bluetooth drivers, but on the installed programs it displays as Broadcom Bluetooth. There is no way it could install itself, I keep record of my downloaded drivers.

It confirms that if you also have Intel WiFi/Bluetooth combo card, you should download both drivers (WiFi and Bluetooth) from the Intel website as I wrote in my first post.
