Hi all,

Looking for a bit of info and help if possible.

We have two Wireless providers in our town having a war. Now supplying wireless connectivity in my eyes is a good thing trying to at least provide to people with connectivity but our problem now arises that these two companies one backed by @lantic is causing serious headaches and they want to be more crooked than Spermcount charging exorbitant prices prices for installation etc. just to give an idea R 4500.00 for set up !!! I know the equipment is about R 2000.00 but R 2500.00 for labour come on !

I have a customers using wireless networks in their offices and since these two started with their little dominance war we have nothing but problems. As far as my knowledge goes they are setting up AP's all over town and is suddenly starting to boost their signals to gain dominance and cause havoc for the other. I heard of them putting up to 1.5 Watt boosters on their antenna's.

Now my problem is this, my customers start losing signal inside their offices for their office networks (their AP's connect about 5 pc's in a radius of 10 - 15m) which of course is causing major headaches even the railway "sinjale" is falling over because of these guys.

HELP seriously needed what can be done ??

This is the kind of thing that happens when people break the rules....

Which town is this?
 
It's illegal to have a WiFi signal stronger than 100mW or (20 dBi) not to mention using it to sell commercially. WiFi is a public domain frequency so these guy's are probably breaking the law in both cases. If I was you I'll report these guy's to ICASA or even better Telkom. They'll surely close these guys down ...
 
By the way: that kind of boosters are illegal in South Africa, only for export if you check Miro's pricelist.

now, if only we could get miro to export them all so wisp's/wifi-abusers can't get their grubby little paws on them.
 
Ok great now how do I go about reporting these schmucks to ICASA or even better is there a way to scramble their damn signals so nobody can do anything and lwt their "customers" kick their butts <- this would actually be great.

ICASA will not investigate interference in the ISM band. Your only solution is to sit back and wait for these idiots to realize they are screwing themselves over as well as everybody else.

I find it hard to believe they are messing up signals inside your clients offices? If it was an outdoor link yes, but a local LAN? Can you perhaps list the equipment you are using, and what you have tried so far i.e. D-Link AP with additional 5 db antenna. Tried channel 1,6 and 11....
 
Ok well I have tried a Gigabyte AP and a installed a new D-Link AP with the exact same issue.

My clients are getting kinda cheesed off as you can imagine. I'm not using any extra antenna/s for the Lan inside the office dammit man the radius of this place is not even more than 25m in diameter. No way that anything inside the building is causing any interference.

Even Spoornet is bitching about this, but nothing wants to do something because the one guy is backed by @lantic and they said they will do everything to support him. YEAH SUPPORT HIM TO MUCK UP EVERYBODY ELSE AS LONG AS THEY CAN MAKE A BUCK !!.

They are all selling internet access and whether they have the legal licensing and stuff I have no idea but really !!
 
Do you have proof they are using 1.5 Watt amps ?

Have u actually seen these ?
 
wrap an antenna in foil, setup an ap with same ssid and freq, point antenna to theire highsite and wait :-)
 
I had a chat with the ICASA boys a while back.
They say you CAN infact complain about noise, if you can prove that the cause of the noise is an operator that is operating above 100mW.
Get some pictures, get some readings... Take them to ICASA.

Will do, apparently ICASA did a survey here and found these guys to be operating on the 8,9and 10 channels of 2.4 and warned them to use a lower channel as there are plans for a governmental Wireless network for something or other and they will be using the higher channels.

As I said in my first post that what these guys are trying to do is not a bad thing only problem is the way they go about it, for the life of me I just can not understand why people can't just try and accomadate everybody, now they have to show off to the detriment of everybody else. No wonder there is regulations and laws.
