Hi,
Does anybody know of a way to setup a wifi internet network? i need a long range coverage of +- 7km. If you know where i can buy the products (rooters, antennas, software for user authentication) i would appreciate it.

7km is not a problem for wireless if you have line of sight.

search the forums. (WISP/wireless) if you have any more questions after that post away

Do i need to apply for any kind of license before i can setup a internet wifi network?:)

Nope, but you need to stay within the allowed power outputs etc etc - "100 mW". But as long as you use off the shelf products, approved by ICASA, you will be A OK.

Ah, I missed that small detail. Is this for a WISP service? Then there is other procedures that you need to go through. Like the VANs license maybe. Not sure though.

Hi All,
I'm trying to set up a community based Wireless system to monitor cameras do I still need a VANS license? Please contact me with an suppliers of such equipment.
Thanks All you Guys!

If I understand it correctly you only need a VANS license if you're a commerciall WISP?

If no-one makes $$$ out of it you're o.k.

But I'm no expert.:D

There are several link-budget calculators available on the Internet that you can use to make sure that your link stands a chance of working and remains within the EIRP limit of 20dBm. These calculators take output power, antenna gain and feedline loss into account. Some of the nice ones even let you calculate free-space path loss versus receive antenna gain and receiver sensitivity. Necessary tools for anyone wanting to set up a WiFi link *and* remain legal.

Value Added Network Service(vans)
are you adding value to a network thru wireless?yes, i think get a licence!
i might be wrong ,willing to admit if somebody knows better?

Even if you didn't build your own wireless network, and just used telkom, or someone else's network infrastructure to provide a service you'd need a VAN's license. It's the LAW.

Then, after that, if you feel brave, you can tread the nonexistent line in deciding whether your VAN's license allows you to build your own network (which it doesn't according to ICASA, the DOC, Ivy and gubberment).
