I am looking for a suitable WiFi connection to connect two buildings up to 500 meters apart.
Any suggestions?

Depends what you want to do with the connection.
2 X Linksys WRT 54gl with Yagi antenna's should do most jobs for u

LOS? or are there other structures etc in the way?

If LOS, then the linksys routers and antennas will be fine - see jawug.

Agreed. as was said go to JAWUG's site http://www.jawug.za.net or http://www.wug.za.net

or come directly into our IRC channel - lots of guru's in there...(all willing to assist)

 yagi's to go 500m??! Ok, backing off a bit: none of (the rest of) us know what the area is like; maybe he's got some kind of prehistoric monster hedge in the way, but short of some pretty damn large (but passable with gain) obstruction, using external antenna action is just silly. (it's not only omni's that are 'evil' you know, inappropriately used directional antennas can also be a nuisance)

true... maybe 8 dBi patch..cheaper too

I have done testing on a Gigabyte wireless router (very nice piece of equipment). With its standard 2dBi antenna 4 walls and the signal is lost over some 25M (open coverage +-100M). If you are going line of sight less major concrete obstructions an 8dBi omni antenna should get you 500M but the signal strength will have degraded. I have built a Cantenna for the hell of it which was not optimal as per calculation, but went through 2 double brick walls and got over 100M before signal was lost.
On another note LinkSys are pricey as a Cisco entry brand you pay for the name. Any wireless AP can do the trick.

:D heh, I find myself in mind of "that" neighbourhood dog that goes off on a barking fit at, well, nothing - not unlike our knee-jerk reaction friend here  ..Ryder old son, it helps to read all the words either side of the word 'omni' before going off pop you know (it'll probably help with that throbbing vein syndrome..! ;)

heh, you're telling me? If you look around some, you may find that I've already taken this 'heretical' to some (no names needed, they know who they are) position ..and got ranted at NO end (tho' IIRC, one of the saner members of that lynch ^H^H^H^H^H ..posse, actually showed some sign of independent thought and relented just a little (but enough) on this very point)

Whooohooo! I love omni's .. they make my buisness run..
Start->run->Kismet .... log for a few days ... WEP keys aquired (if any are used) ... Whoohoo!, a DHCP server, couldnt be easier.... hmm, whats this excell file? Salaries.xls - oooo, an email .pst folder

How much is your data worth?
Please use omnis :-P (I receive Omni's up to 20KM away with an off-the-shelf grid)
