WikiLeaks' payment processor will sue credit card companies

<RantForTheDay>

Love it. Hope they win.
This Wikileaks saga has been a real eye opener for many people. Just shows you how much influence the elite have over us, and it shows that they're capable of using it. Scary, especially if you take into account how inequality has accumulated all over the world like a disease these past few decades.
I don't see a quick and dirty ending to this thing. Interesting time to be alive, the day when internet globalization of the masses clashes with the status quo of our elite based societal rules and regulations.

Let's hope that one day the thing that rises from the ashes of this fallout would be the technology and the realizaton that we don't need ill appointed politicians anymore, people who carry out decisions for years based on the fact that they were elected via ignorance, lies, money and deceit in the first place. Politicians, they always **** things up in the end. They're nothing but unfortunate failure prone weakpoints that are supposed to uphold the system integrity while just looking out for their own backsides, the way we all do. What we need is freedom of information and the ability to have OUR choices put into action by using close to real-time communication to interact with other working class people around the globe. Screw the politicians, we just need people to carry out the choices we make, we don't need these people to make the choices for us. It's pretty obvious that democracy in its current form has failed miserably, and yet, it's the best option we had. Time for some change in the age of information where ideas are worth gold. Let's hope we win our next battle, the one that decides the freedom of the internet.

It might sound atrociously poetic but the current events speak for themselves.
It's no guarantee that the world would be a better place, but it sure as hell sounds like a better idea than our current outdated 19th century idea of democracy.

Wikileaks FTW!!!

Money + power often brings political scandals and social upheaval......

Whats new pu$$ycat ?

Well if Wikileaks fails then it's a blow for freedom of speech, freedom of the press and personal human rights in general. Government organisations and especially diplomats should damned well learn to be believe in their diplomacy so that they don't have to hide so much. Much of the controversy seems to be from insulting statements made behind closed doors. Is that professional? Should something like that not come out in performance reviews anyway? Or is government a special zone where bull**** should fly?

The fundamental question any democracy should be asking themselves right now is: Is a government that withholds large amounts of information from it's citizens to protect itself from said citizens behaving in the best interest of those citizens who appointed them and are paying them to act in their best interest? Also... Are government employees not just normal citizens in their own right or have they elevated themselves unlawfully?

Is all this secrecy making things better for everybody or just for a few? I can understand military secrecy between the USA and China for example, but only up until the point where you realize that your typical American or Chinese individual would have no problem sitting together to have lunch. The majority of both populations would surely be able to manage that without ripping each other's throats out.

It's all a modern day cold war, but not for self-defense against the latest (ironically most likely unintentionally co-operatively designed super weapon), but for the rights to the most (or seemingly in some cases) all of the world's resources. I wonder when everybody will start realizing that there is way enough of everything to go around so that all people can live dignified lives these days and the current system is actually a bit repressive to many. Just look at the world - Many countries have great mineral riches and are poor. Many countries have almost no natural resources and are rich (for example they have great human resources and use it well). Some countries run on fun (tourism) and may not always be super rich but are deliriously happy (and really... how sh#t would the world be without these places?).

Real growth can't be taken or bought, it can only be nurtured.

Exactly.

if Wikileaks wins then it might also be a blow for freedom of speech, freedom of the press and personal human rights in general, since all governments will move to squash all info that can be leaked, enacting and enforcing tighter controls and legislating harsher penalties for anyone caught leaking info. Censorship will increase and bad behaviour by all offenders will be swept further under the carpet, hidden behind walls of people quite willing to die for their country rather than embarrass them. The freedom of the internet will vanish under surveillance, eavesdropping, malicious gossip, paranoia and firewalls.

Seriously, does nobody see that happening?

Of course. That's why it's so interesting to follow this whole thing. If that happens I've lost all faith in humanity and I'll probably never seer things change for the better in my lifetime... :-/
That said, I do think however it would be tough as hell to keep the truth locked away like that. It just takes one weak link.... and if there's always been one constant trait in humanity it's been our curiosity, fact is, the more they try to hide the more curious people will get.
That's why I also think Cybespace anonymity is so important.

Hmmm, I would rather avoid it completely, thanks. Let sleeping dogs lie. If you do have to release info about a cover-up... do it very slowly, and very discreetly and so that it can never be traced back to you.

So out of fear we should cower and back off in order to stay in our comfort zones. I say give it to them and let's see if the constitutions of nations are worth the paper they are written on. A lot of what is happening is just plain wrong on so many levels.

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Ahmen folk! Ahmen!

Viva wikileaks!

I really hope they successfully sue. In the mean time I have stopped all business with Paypal.

No thanks. I much prefer the anarchy, almost none of the progress humanity has ever made came about by just sitting around. In fact, it's our western tendency to "Let sleeping dogs lie" that got us here in the first place. Luckily with the help of technology even our bacbone-less generation can do something about the status quo. Even if it means DDoS'ing a damn site or cancelling your Paypal, or whatever.
I don't know about other people in here, but being a part of stuff like this makes me feel like there's more to life than just work, kids, car payments etc. Even if this stuff feels like it's happening a million miles away, we're all a part of it.

I totally do, and I wanted to include it in my message as it is a realistic possible end result, but I chose to discuss what in my mind is the real issue and to try and show how ridiculous it is.

But you are unfortunately right as well :(

Hmm, I see that some of comments in this thread are being censored... despite their content not attacking anybody or containing any insults. That's pretty sad.

Jesus Christ what happened to freedom of speech and the truth?

Gary weren't you going on about freedom and blah blah when vodacom blocked that website?

Uh, no. I think I was going on about proper court processes and procedures.

It has started :D

"The Internet sees any attempt at censorship as damage, and simply routes around it"

That quote may be true for now, but governments world-wide are attempting to change that. We need to fight them tooth-and-nail to prevent that. Our freedoms are slowly eroding away, and most sheeple are too complacent to do something about it :(
